The U.S. federal government spent $5.8 billion over the past three years to incarcerate criminal aliens – nonresidents who are in the country illegally or legally and convicted of a crime.

The report by the General Accounting Office – the investigative arm of Congress – shows the number of criminal aliens in federal prisons increased from about 42,000 at the end of 2001 to about 49,000 at the end of last year.

The direct federal costs during the study's time frame were estimated to be $4.2 billion, with federal reimbursements to state and local governments totalling $1.6 billion through the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, or SCAAP.

The majority of criminal aliens were identified as citizens of Mexico.

In addition, state prisons in fiscal 2003 housed about 74,000 criminal aliens. About 80 percent were in just five states -- Arizona, California, Florida, New York and Texas.

Also, about 147,000 criminal aliens were jailed in 698 local jurisdictions that received SCAAP reimbursement in 2003.

About 30 percent of those criminals were in five municipal and country jails -- Los Angeles County, California; New York City, New York; Orange County, California; Harris County, Texas; and Maricopa County, Arizona.

As WorldNetDaily reported, an analysis of census data earlier this year by the Federation for American Immigration Reform showed Texas' illegal immigrant population is costing the state's taxpayers more than $4.7 billion per year for education, medical care and incarceration.

The uncompensated cost of incarcerating illegal aliens in Texas' state and county prisons amounts to about $150 million a year -- not including local jail detention costs or related law enforcement and judicial expenditures or the monetary costs of the crimes that led to their incarceration.

Last year, the Center for Immigration Studies used Census Bureau data from 2002 to determine that the fiscal impact of illegal aliens across the nation was $10 billion. The figure was derived from subtracting taxes paid by illegals from the value of services they enjoy.

    Immigrant Criminals

This is a damn shame. "They come here for a better life". They were criminals in Texico and they wanted more "work". So they come here to rape our women, murder our citizens, steal from our homes, and have a wider market for their dope. Then when they get out they fade into the night. Make me Homeland Security head for six months.
    1. Deportation/Internment Camps.
    2. The 2nd Armored Division, 3rd ID, and 82nd Airborne along the border with shoot to kill orders.
    3. A "Great Wall of America"
    4. Land mines and Claymore mines every 100 yards from California to Laredo.
    5. Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta and SEAL Team Six sent into Mexico to bring Fox to face a federal indictment for R.I.C.O charges, subversion of our laws, terroism, infecting our nation with diseases that were gone, and I can think of some more charges. He would be tried in a military court and face the death penalty.
    6. Annexation of Mexico and immediate explotation of their oil reserves.
Oh well, a fellow can dream can't he?

    Illegal alien criminals

The problem of illegal alien criminals is old... very old. Mexican criminals have been laughing at the US way of handling prisoners for years.

In some jurisdictions Mexican convicts are offered reduced time "if" the agree to doing their time in Mexican prisons or in agreeing to deportation. This is a joke because once released many sneak back into the US. Also, some of these criminals make markedly lower sentence adjustments once in Mexico.

Another painfully laughable situation, is that Mexican prisoners get much better treatment in US prisons as compared to Mexican prison. Thus, Mexican inmates get health and mental health services, scientifically designed diets, housing that is within Federal standards, and even English as a Second language classes at taxpayers expense.

Among Mexican inmates, our criminal justice system (from arrest to court to jail or prison) is a taken as gringo "stupidity." It is not appreciated but is seen as an American weakness.

Lastly, many Mexican alien criminals know that if arrested they can expect all kinds of "bleeding heart" perks... so doing crime in America is very cost effective (compared to Mexico).

I am glad the light bulbs are coming on little by little.

    funny story

I remember there was one night my boyfriend was coming home(legal resident from mexico city) and out of nowhere some illegal drunk mexican pulls out of a tejano bar and of course my boyfriend hits him. The little coward tried to run away and the front of our car was totaled. Luckily there was a witness who stopped and helped my boyfriend hold the guy there until the police got there. When the cop got there(mexican american spanish speaking cop), the illegal was so drunk and when he found out he had to go to jail tried to take a swing at the cop. Of course, he had no license, no insurance...so we were just out of luck. We waited to go to court but by the time the court date was close, we found out he got deported. They let this guy who tried to swing at a cop...get deported instead of facing justice.

Thanks for the comments, Patriot Chicano and others. I know the problem is old, but the cost is now starting to get so big it is a real burden on the economy. The problem is, most honest Americans are too busy trying to make a living (and pay taxes) to keep up with all this illegal alien nonsense. I think it may take another 911 with weapons coming across the border to really get the attention of the masses. We are all passionate, but the vast majority in this country is apathetic. Let's wake them up.

You can thank the bleeding heart left for the cushy prisons and in-stir perks. If it were left to people like me these vermin would be in a leaky boat to Cuba - I'm sure Fidel would take care of them.

We need to build more prisons, put the vermin away - foreign and domestic - and let them break rocks every day for the rest of their lives. But, oh no, the ACLU would have a hissy.

Tell you congressman we need to.....
