My city, Tucson, has seen a huge increase in gang activity. We've always had it, but it is rapidly increasing. They say that over 20 of our murders this year were gang related, a big increase over recent years. The Police Chief just announced that what was a temporary gang task force, will now be made permanent. Who was the first one to cry out in disappointment about this, but the County Attorney, Barbara LaWall. She says this will bring more work for her already taxed office. Boohoo. A crime is a crime is a crime. If your attitude is that there's too much, you get tough and show them you mean business to try and stop future crime, not throw up your hands and say there's just too much so we won't prosecute. This is something her office is really getting in the habit of. She just stopped prosecuting check fraud crimes too because there are so many of them. She also wants to send some of the gang crimes to be prosecuted by the FEDERAL Prosecutor's office, which in Tucson is the busiest one in the nation because of the influx of illegal aliens through the area. What does she think attributes to increased gang activity? She has also refused to prosecute smugglers who are caught in her jurisdiction as well under the State Law that they're trying to pull out from under the feet of Sheriff Arpio and County Atty Andrew Thomas in Phoenix. This woman should never have been re-elected the last time, but no viable candidate came forward to run against her. Hopefully someone will do it the next time.
