Cruz doesn’t close door on Supreme Court seat

Cruz doesn’t close door on Supreme Court seat

    11/18/16 01:04 PM EST

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is not ruling out the possibility of filling the Supreme Court’s open seat.

Asked Friday at a National Lawyers Convention event whether he’d accept a high court nomination, Cruz responded: “What I will say is that history is long and can take unexpected paths.”

“I think it is absolutely vital that that seat and every other seat that comes vacant on the court be filled principle constitutionalists who will be faithful to the law and will check their own policy preferences at the door,” he added.

Cruz, who lost to President-elect Donald Trump in the GOP presidential primary, has been floated as a potential candidate to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

Trump’s transition team was also reportedly considering making Cruz the next attorney general, but it announced Friday that Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) has been tapped for that position.

For now, Cruz said he has the privilege of serving 27 million Texans in the Senate.

“I look forward to continuing to carry out that responsibility and continuing to fight for the principles of freedom and principles embodied in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. They are very much in jeopardy right now,” he said.
