Darrell Issa: We May Hold Lois Lerner in Contempt As Early As Next Week (Video)



House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) told Greta Van Susteren Wednesday night that the committee may seek to hold Lois Lerner in contempt as early as next week.

Greta Van Susteren: Are you going to seek to hold her in contempt for not answering the questions?
Darrell Issa: Well, you know that the Speaker, he called, he thought that was appropriate today. Our committee will consider it. I’ve conferred with some of my members. I plan on meeting them before we leave this week. And, we could consider doing it as early as next week.

Hissy fit!

Moments ago, embattled ex-Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner appeared before Darrell Issa's House Oversight Committee. She was supposedly there to answer questions about the IRS targeting of Tea Party groups. You may remember that President Obama has dismissed this entire scandal because he claims there wasn't "even a smidgen of corruption" involved.

That's weird, because Lois Lerner promptly invoked her rights under the 5th Amendment and refused to answer any questions. For the record, the 5th Amendment is the one that deals with not offering testimony that might incriminate yourself. You'd think that would be hard to do if the President's "not a smidgen" claim was true.

Anyway, there was no surprise here. Everyone expected that - without immunity - this was exactly what Lerner would do. The interesting part came after she clammed up and a visibly frustrated Issa adjourned the hearing.

It seems ranking Democrat Rep. Elijah Cummings had planned on doing some of his patented "inane grandstanding," and Issa derailed his intentions. Cummings would not be denied. First, he tried to pretend that he had a legitimate question, but then immediately launched into his standard set of rambling talking points. So, Issa dismissed everyone in the room and cut the power to Cummings' microphone.

This triggered a meltdown that rivalled the Fukushima reactor. Seriously. Cummings completely lost it.

"I AM A MEMBER OF THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," He bellowed. "AND I AM TIRED OF THIS!!!"

GOP: Former IRS Exec Lerner Facing Contempt of Congress Charge

Several GOP lawmakers including Ohio's Rep. Jim Jordan and Utah's Jason Chaffetz told Politico that a contempt of Congress penalty was under consideration.

Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa said "We want her to come back and answer questions. We'll see on contempt."

I hope that the contempt charge results with withholding her federal retirement. She should start singing like a canary.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said Wednesday night that his committee could consider holding former Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress as early as next week for failing to testify at Wednesday’s hearing.

Appearing on Fox News’ “On the Record,” Issa discussed the explosive incident with U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings after adjourning Wednesday’s hearing and said he didn’t consider Cummings request to “ask a question,” because Cummings wasn’t asking a question.

“[Cummings] was just endlessly slandering the efforts of the committee,” Issa said. “Mr. Cummings is there with the president on ‘Not a smidgeon of evidence’” regarding the IRS targeting of conservatives, he added.
But, in fact, there is evidence that “leads to Lois Lerner and that’s why we hoped to hear from her,” Issa told Van Susteren.

Issa explained that, as the Democratic ranking member, Cummings received the same emails Issa attempted to question Lerner on, like the email where Lerner specifically wrote, “Tea Party Matter very dangerous.”
“When the discovery comes in from the IRS, it goes to both of us together,” Issa said. “So simultaneously they’ve been receiving the same emails, the same information. They’ve been in every single one of 33 interviews. This is not something where we’re asking questions behind closed doors.”

Van Susteren pressed Issa to answer whether the House Oversight Committee would consider holding the new IRS commissioner in contempt for continuing to fail to comply with the subpoena requesting the emails, to which Issa said the Committee would “have no choice but to hold” him in contempt as they did with Attorney General Eric Holder.
