RED ALERT! Last push in Indiana! We need you now!

    ALIPAC Activists,

We need you to swing into action on this full force right away. We are almost there in Indiana!

    ---
AT LAST!!! Speaker Bauer has named the House Conferees on SB 345. They are Rep. Pelath-D and Rep. Koch-R, both of whom have supported the legislation in the past.

The Conferees and advisors will now meet this afternoon to hash out the final details. Senator Delph-R and Representative Tincher-D anticipated a last-minute meeting and already agreed upon the Delph/Tincher compromise language for the bills. Additional changes can still be made. If the Conferees sign off on the Conference Report containing illegal immigration language, it then goes to both the Senate and House for final votes on Friday, 3/14/08, the last day of this session. From there, the last hurdle is the Governor's desk.

    FREE EMAIL:

Thank you for your past support of Senator Delph's illegal immigration bill. Please support the Delph/Tincher language as part of SB 345 and/or HB 1219.

I am counting on you, in your role as Conferee, to get this crucial piece of legislation to the full House and Senate for a final vote on March 14, 2008.

Passing this legislation will go a long way towards reducing unnecessary government spending and towards restoring the rule of law.

    Sincerely,
    (your name)

Thank you to all you ALIPACers who have done such a great job supporting us in Indiana and around the country!!! Hopefully, you can add Indiana to the win column by the end of the day tomorrow!

Meanwhile, I can almost hear the fireworks from here! The Conferees are the ones who must agree to and sign off on the Conference Report. But, the Speaker picked Advisors from the most rabid representatives on the left and the right, so you can guarantee there's quite a battle raging at this very moment as to what the final language of the bill will say!

Both bills (SB 345 and HB 1219) still have a chance of passing with the immigration language in tact. This increases our chances. At one point, the immigration language was stripped out of 1219, but arms were twisted and it was reinsterted.

    Thanks again, from Indiana!

    Immigration bill conferees named
    By Dan McFeely

House and Senate conferees planned to meet this afternoon to begin working on the illegal immigration bill. But a compromise could be hard to acheive, as both sides expressed no desire to give in to the other.

House members will be pushing for the Senate conferees to simply accept the House version that is currently part of Senate Bill 345. But Senate conferees are expected to try to insert language ironed out earlier this week by Sen. Mike Delph, R-Carmel and his House sponsor, Rep. Vern Tincher, D-Riley.

"I think the House passed a tough bill and a good bill," said Rep. Scott Pelath, D-Michigan City, the House Democrat conferee. "I think the Senate can concur on that language adopted in the House."

Asked what he thought of the compromise language from Delph and Tincher, Pelath replied: "I think we already have a good compromise."

Meanwhile, Delph indicated that Republican Senators could hold up another bill, HB 1219, unless illegal immigration issues can be resolved.

"They are going to have to meet us half way," said Delph. "We are not going to just take what the House wants at face value. They are going to have to work with us."

As it stands now, HB 1219 is an education funding bill that would provide $1 million to Ivy Tech Community College and $250,000 to Vincennes University to contract with apprenticeship technology degree providers to offer special programs. But the bill was also amended by the Senate to include the entire contents of Delph's original SB 335 illegal immigration bill.

    William's message to the conferees.

Sending by e-mail and the following asap with a call to each office.

    --

Subject line: Please pass SB 345 and keep the bill strong on enforcement!

    Senator Weatherwax:

Please insist that SB 435 be sent from your conferee committee to the floor for concurrence before the end of session. Please keep this bill strong and do not allow anyone to strip out or water down the enforcement provisions. We need a strong state law in Indiana that will enforce immigration laws. Eighty percent of the public wants the state of Indiana to take strong action. Please stand with the citizens you serve and tell the special interests trying to stop or water down this bill that We The People are the dominant voice in America.

I hope to hear good news about the passage of this bill soon.
