Determined Survivor Outwits Would-Be Killers

Police in Wisconsin were the hunt for Juan Roberto Nieto. On August 19, 2003, police say Nieto and his friend, Gregorio Morales, snatched a Green Bay woman from the parking lot of a local nightclub. She put up a fierce fight but was overpowered by the men. According to investigators, the two men drove the woman to a rural area in Rockland, Wisconsin.

There, the men took turns raping her in a grassy ditch. Once they were finished, cops say Nieto strangled her until he believed she was dead, then doused her with lighter fluid and set her on fire. But cops say the woman was only pretending to be dead-- she knew it was her only chance of survival. According to the woman, though her body was on fire and she was in excruciating pain, she somehow managed to wait until the men had sped off in their truck before attempting to put out the flames. Police say she rolled on the ground, managed to put out the fire, and used her last ounce of strength to crawl to a nearby house for help.

Real Life CSI
At first, all investigators had to work from were two sketches based on the survivor's description of her attackers. That all changed when Wisconsin dairy farmer Dick Binish saw the sketches in the paper and immediately called police. He recognized the two suspects as two men who worked on his farm: 27-year-old Gregorio Morales and 23-year-old Juan Roberto Nieto.

Playing an amateur detective, Binish offered Morales a soda. After Morales had taken a sip, Binish saved the bottle and gave it to the authorities to obtain a DNA sample. The sample from the bottle came back a match from DNA left by the rapists. But Morales had fled by the time the results came back.

Gregorio Morales was arrested in New Mexico.
From Wisconsin To New Mexico
Cops tracked Morales to New Mexico and slapped the cuffs on him. Nieto was on the run, but cops were able to track him down.

Nieto Nabbed
Juan Nieto had last been seen in the summer of 2003 in New Mexico. Cops weren't sure when he'd left New Mexico, but his trail was cold. AMW aired Nieto's case on November 13, 2004. Tips sent police to Rockville, Ga., but they came up empty-handed.
Nieto Pleads Not Guilty
Juan Nieto, a man accused of repeatedly raping a woman, setting her on fire after dousing her with lighter fluid and leaving her for dead in a field pleaded not guilty to five felonies, including attempted murder, kidnapping, and sexual assault.

Working leads, cops received information that Nieto could be living in DeKalb County, Georgia. On Monday December 6, 2004 at around 6:30 am, agents in Georgia went to an apartment where Nieto had been living with his brother for about four to six months.

They took Nieto into custody without incident. Police believe he had been working as a day laborer, but they say Nieto told them he saw himself on television and had been hiding in the apartment for several weeks.
