DOJ weakest link in cartel gun smuggling wiretap leak DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE

DOJ weakest link in cartel gun smuggling wiretap leak

    NOVEMBER 26, 2012

    BY: DAVID CODREA

A federal prosecutor’s husband who was indicted in September for leaking wiretap information to a suspect in an ATF gun smuggling investigation in New Mexico “was a longtime friend of one of the key players in the ring,” ABQ Journal reported yesterday.

Danny Burnett, married to Assistant U.S. Attorney Paula Burnett, was friends with “former Columbus, N.M., Police Chief Angelo Vega” who has since pleaded guilty for his role “running interference” for another Columbus official who has also admitted his guilt.

“Paula Burnett resigned as chief of the U.S. Attorney’s Criminal Division and resumed her duties as a prosecutor,” the report continues, advising “She has not been charged with any wrongdoing.”

Still, U.S. District Judge Claire V. Eagan, presiding over her husband’s case, admits it “will present ‘unique’ discovery issues because some of the documents involved are emails to or from” the wife, and further stated “It is not always clear what emails are related to the criminal charges against defendant or if the e-mails are privileged.”

Department of Justice claims of privilege due to ongoing criminal investigations in a gun trafficking case involving Mexican cartels, wiretap applications, smuggled guns showing up at murder scenes, official corruption … it would seem a parallel in many ways to the yet unfolding Fast and Furious debacle.

There’s another story still unresolved as well, and from the same jurisdiction in Las Cruces. Why Rick and Ryin Reese are still behind bars seems a fair question. Another fair question would be why the Department of Justice under Attorney General Eric Holder’s leadership continually appears to be the weakest link whenever it comes to Mexican gun trafficking cases.
