    Donald Trump’s Hurricane Joaquin problem

By Chris Cillizza October 1 at 12:09 PM

Timesman Mark Leibovich has a terrific profile of Donald Trump in the NYT magazine this weekend. It contains this paragraph, which is critical to understanding why Trump might well struggle when voters start making final decisions in the 2016 primary fight next year:

It can be difficult to picture Trump, such a pop-culture showman, presiding over the kinds of presidency-*defining ‘‘moments’’ that require solemn empathy. I mentioned Obama after the shooting this summer at a church in Charleston, S.C., or George W. Bush at ground zero in the days after the Sept. 11 attacks. Empathy, he assured me, ‘‘will be one of the strongest things about Trump.’’ But for now, he is in sales mode, trying to convince people that he can do a job. ‘‘When I’m in that position, when we have horrible hurricanes, all kinds of horrible things happen, you’ve got to have empathy.’’

This is not simply a hypothetical conversation. As we speak, Hurricane Joaquin is swirling in the Bahamas, with weather forecasters across the country trying to puzzle out its track and how much damage it might do to the East Coast. While Joaquin's latest track seems to suggest it (he?) will move eastward and deliver only a glancing blow to land and population centers from North Carolina to New York, the hurricane does serve as a reminder of the various hats that any president (or anyone who wants to be president) must wear: statesman, inspirer and, most importantly in this case, empathizer.

Donald Trump is, um, not empathetic. He's not even good at feigning empathy. His answer to Leibovich speaks volumes: "When I’m in that position, when we have horrible hurricanes, all kinds of horrible things happen, you’ve got to have empathy.’’ Er, what?

Donald Trump is about being larger-than-life -- the guy who says what he wants to whom he wants whenever he wants. He makes deals — great deals, as he likes to remind you. If elected president, he will make everything so strong — the military, the economy, a wall between the U.S.-Mexico border — that no one will even think about messing with us. That sales pitch has, by and large, worked for Trump in the race to date. People — and, especially, Republicans — like Trump's bravado and bluster; they like the idea that he will bring back a toughness and brashness they believe has been missing in America for the last eight years (and maybe longer.)

The problem for Trump is that being president isn't only about kicking butt and taking names. (If so, The Rock would be president.) It's also about understanding how to channel the nation's mood in moments of crisis or national emergency. It's about finding ways to bring joy from gloom or to understand that sometimes saying nothing is the best response of all.

It's very hard for me — or for Leibovich — to imagine Trump in that empathizer-in-chief role. Trump's entire career and persona are built on selling a version of himself and his brand that is powerful and fearless. Introspection seems far removed from Trump's wheelhouse; in fact, I struggle to remember a time since he has entered the presidential race in which he spent much time talking — much less thinking about or identifying with — someone other than himself.

That doesn't mean that Trump absolutely couldn't do it. is ability to channel the anger and anxiety of the American public was something I didn't see coming. And it's clear with the rollout of his economic plan this week that Trump understands that he needs a second act.

But at 69 years old, is Donald Trump the sort of person who can simply flip on an empathy switch somewhere inside him? And even if he can somehow tap into that deeply hidden part of his nature, can he convince the public that a New York City billionaire who proudly parades his own personal jet around understands what they have lost when disaster does strike?

Count me as skeptical. Like, very skeptical.
