ACT NOW TO PASS THE DREAM ACT!

As many of you know, on September 14, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced plans to bring the DREAM Act (S. 729) up for a vote as an amendment to the Department of Defense authorization bill. It is scheduled to be voted on in the Senate as early as next week -- and we need you to take action to make sure that Congress passes this important legislation!

We need you to make calls to YOUR senators asking them to (1) vote for the DREAM Act and (2) make a statement on the Senate floor in support of the DREAM Act. Here is the list of senators we are targeting (PDF). Please call TODAY!

The DREAM Act, introduced by Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Richard Lugar (R-IN), is legislation that would provide certain undocumented students with the opportunity to earn permanent legal status if they came to the United States as children, have good moral character, finish high school or obtain a G.E.D., and complete two years of college or military service. The DREAM Act has the potential to provide nearly 1 million youth who have grown up in the U.S. with improved access to higher education and an earned pathway to U.S. citizenship.

Because the DREAM Act is being offered as an amendment to the Department of Defense authorization bill, there will be several procedural votes on which we will need 60 votes before the Senate can proceed with an actual vote on the DREAM Act. The first vote will be next Tuesday, September 21, 2010.
