Drunk driving and illegal immigration: they definitely don't mix!

I realize the good things that this nation's 11 million illegal immigrants do. They work for next to nothing to make a better life for themselves and their loved ones.

But what about the 80,000 illegal aliens who have murdered, raped, and molested our citizens? They receive prison time and are released -- back into the United States. They commit even more crimes- including the crime of driving drunk.

I don't want to make this to be an issue of immigration as much because it's a worldwide problem. All over the globe, drunk drivers feel that they have the right to drink and drive and then drink some more. However, Mexico promotes severe alcholism and drunk driving.

"Christmas Story" director Bob Clark and son were killed by an illegal immigrant who was driving drunk. And recently, two female teenagers were killed by another illegal immigrant who was driving drunk.

The problem is simply that drunk driving is accepted in Mexico. Sure there are drunk driving laws, but a small bribe to a Mexican cop can fix all of that. In fact, during 2003's Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve in Mexico City, the police stopped doing Breathalyzer tests; believing that the drunks would simply sleep it off.

And in Mexico, there's a lot more of "macho" stunts involving alcohol:
* drag racing
* speeding, reckless driving
* inattention, inability to read signs
* enforced silence of young males' girlfriends
* and "proving" that one can drink and drive.

Columnist Brenda Walker has noted: "Driving responsibly with your seatbelt fastened in your fuel-efficient car won't help when a dead-drunk driver has his clunker barreling straight for you at highway speed."
