EDITORIAL -Spitzer’s new license plan is the Pitz

Governor Eliot Spitzer just doesn’t get it.

Barely 10 months into his first gubernatorial term, and up to his neck in a nasty ethics probe, the state’s chief executive officer now wants to grant driver licenses to illegal immigrants.

To us, that seems unconstitutional, a magnet for trouble and a gross contravention of the licensing rules that former Governor George Pataki and the 9/11 Commission labored to fortify after the terrorist attacks so that New Yorkers could have a modicum of protection.

After all, 18 of the 19 World Trade Center hijackers used their valid US driver licenses to enroll in flight schools, board planes and activate their diabolical plots.

But, Governor Spitzer and Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Commissioner David Swarts seem to have their heads in the sand when it comes to shielding the rights of the lawful. They want to soft-soap the intelligence of savvy New Yorkers and side-step the issue of national security by driving home the “benefitsâ€

I think we are watching the death of what has been a brilliant career. Can't wait for the funeral.
