El Pueblo To Try To Address Drunken Driving Among N.C. Hispa

Also being discussed now on AM 680 WPTF in Raleigh.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- A nonprofit advocacy group for Latinos will use different campaigns in various areas of North Carolina to determine the best way to address the drunken driving problem among Hispanics.

El Pueblo, which says drunken driving is the leading cause of death among Hispanics in North Carolina, will work with the Gov.'s Highway Safety Program and the state Highway Patrol on the three campaigns.

Hispanics were involved 19 percent of DWI charges in 2005, even though they account for only 7 percent of the state's population, according to the state's Administrative Office of the Courts.

In the Triangle, increased enforcement of DWI laws will complement an ad campaign, said Tony Asion, director of public safety for the organization.

The campaign's slogan: "Manejar Borracho? No Seas Tonto Muchacho!" which translates as "Drive Drunk? Don't be a Fool Man!"

The increased enforcement will involve more traffic checkpoints targeting drunken drivers. Pamphlets will be distributed to Hispanics and TV, radio and print ads in Hispanic media will focus on how drunken driving affects families.

The Triad component will involve just the education component, while DWI statistics will be monitored in the Charlotte area.

The effectiveness of each campaign will be gauged through surveys of Hispanics.

The bulk of the state's Hispanics are young men who live alone, which is a group prone to drinking and driving, Asion said, and Hispanics frequently don't understand the state's DWI laws. In addition, there's a machismo attitude that discourages Hispanic men from admitting they're too drunk to drive, he said.

"We have to change that mind-set," Asion said.

El Pueblo, which has a budget of $250,000 for the campaign, hopes to cut drunken driving fatalities in the Hispanic community by 25 percent by the end of the 30-month project, Asion said.

"We feel it is our responsibility to educate and to curtail these numbers," he said.

Last fall, El Pueblo surveyed 900 Hispanic men about drinking and driving in the Triangle, the Triad and the Charlotte areas. Here's what they found:

83 PERCENT didn't know the penalty for a DWI.

    50 PERCENT didn't know the state's legal blood-alcohol limit, which is .08.

44 PERCENThave been arrested for a DWI after drinking and driving.

37 PERCENT have abstained from driving after drinking.

65 PERCENTsaid it was common to drink and drive in their home countries.

25 PERCENT said they thought it was safe to drive after having four drinks.

How about this for a deterrent. If an illegal (someone who cant prove they belong in the US) is caught in a DUI, they are deported. The 250k can be used for deportation costs and keeps the money out of the pockets of another "Hispanic Advocacy Group".

They receive over $400,000 in NC taxpayer money per year and then turn around and use the money to lobby for illegal aliens like the in-state tuition bill we defeated last year.

What I don't get is that they get caught 4-6 times and still aren't jailed and deported. You obviously know the rules after the first offence. Unfortunately, it takes the innocent death of someone to have something done.

This was a common tactic when I lived in CA 20 years ago. Cant tell you how upset I would get knowing mecha would get university student fees for their "activities". Its a shame to see it happen in NC so quickly. Just wait til Herrera (Carrboro city council member) clones start popping up all over the state, living off state taxpayers money, pushing the hispanic agenda. Mark my words, its the beginning of a much more difficult fight!

A couple years ago here in Ca, Hispanic activists tried to pass a bill were Illegals would no longer be stopped at check points for DUI`s, DWI`s, driving without a license or insurance and more, which would basically give them immunity from any state or local traffic laws.

REASON: Get this!! Because they were crying about losing too many cars at the check points!!!!!!!!!
