Hi Cindy. Thanks for posting that one - and a lot of people here probably have noticed I have posted links to that on more than one occasion (it is a good one, isn't it?).

Since we've had a lot of new folks join up recently, I'll include a link to the Snopes version - just so people can see the 2nd-hand and 'sourced' editions of it (below).

To give a brief overview... it is a rather famous speech by former Colorado Governor Richard Lamm (D), given to a group in DC about 2 years ago. It is titled "How To Destroy America" and gist of the speech is it challenges current but often misguided (IMHO) preconceptions about the assumed 'benefits' or 'acceptability' of multiculturalism, and how such polarizing forces are 'tearing' at the fabric of American life, culture, etc. Instead, he makes a strong argument for the need to unify to retain a society that has shared experiences, values, language, etc. It is a compelling read (IMHO):

April: Glad you appreciated that one!

It's one of my favorites - mostly because, it fundamentally changed the way I think about our PC/'multiculturalism-can-only-be-good' mindset which prevails. When I show this speech to people that are fairly progressive/liberal (I'm a former one of those), their eyes get REAL BIG and say 'Oooooooh!' (I do get a kick outta that - it's kinda fun!)

IMHO, it is one of those 4 or 5 essential things to be aware - be they: speeches, videos, documents, etc that comprise a 'must know about list' for all of us like-minded folks here.

Others might include:
>> The Roy Beck video on YouTube (dated on about US pop. growth)
>> The famous Teddy Roosevelt speech- in 1919? ("There is room but for 1 country, 1 language....'),
>> and a couple other things I suppose.

I guess I should spend a few minutes sometime and whip those together into something that people can review in an easy and concise way..yes?

Lamm Keeps Pushing For Immigration Change
(CBS4) DENVER Former Colorado Gov. Dick Lamm has never backed down from a controversy. Lately, he has taken on immigration issues.

In a speech that has circulated widely on the Internet, Lamm argrees with Arnold Tynbee who observed "An autopsy of history would show that all great nations commit suicide."

In a recent interview, Lamm listed the ways he believes the United States has embarked on a path of self-destruction when it comes to immigration.

Number one, Lamm says we will destroy America if we allow it to become a bilingual country.

"History shows us that language is one of the great dividers. When our grandfathers and great-grandfathers came, the only way my grandfather could speak to your grandfather was to speak his common language. Now you can live in west Denver your entire life without ever learning English."

Lamm argues that a country that celebrates diversity rather than unity is on its way to destruction.

"I believe in diversity. I believe that we should become a Joseph's coat of many colors -- but we're one people. If you really want to see how diversity works go to Yugoslavia and see how it's working there."

Lamm maintains that our fastest growing demographic group is the least educated group -- and that will destroy America.

"We see these bright little Hispanic boys. Then they turn 12 years old and all of a sudden there are other cultural influences that make them want to become auto mechanics instead of going to college. We have to solve our drop-out problem."

Finally, Lamm says we will destroy America if we establish a cult of what he calls "victimology."

"If you call people victims even if they are victims it's not doing them any favors. I feel if you're going to solve America's problems you have to crawl out there in no man's land where everybody's firing at you. And that's where truth lies."

There is no doubt that Lamm's strong opinions may put him in the cross-hairs of his critics. But ultimately he argues that to save America, the country must continue to be what it started out to be -- a melting pot -- a place where different cultures, languages, religions continue to meld into one country.

That was great!! I forwarded it to all in my address book! I hope they read it. while working on congress we also need to try to get our family and friends involved in this cause, something sooner or later will open their eyes,lets hope sooner!! This is an eye opener!

From the 'must read' collection... the short speech by Teddy Roosevelt also is a good one. It should be a good read for the newer folks here, although the 'old-timers' have probably seen it more than enough. Anyhow, here 'tis - enjoy.
