SAN DIEGO -- A North County City Council member said she has become the target of vandals because of a proposed ordinance.

Escondido City Councilwoman Marie Waldron authored the proposal, which would fine landlords who rent to illegal immigrants.

On Wednesday night, the City Council discussed the economic impact the ordinance would have on the city if it is approved. There was extra security at Wednesday's meeting, reported NBC 7/39.

Waldron said on Wednesday that in the time since she proposed the ordinance, her downtown clothing store has been vandalized four times and that photographs of her have been posted with the word racist on them.

"We were egged -- eggs thrown at it," said Waldron. "We've had rocks thrown at it, and there's a police case with it."

There are about 150,000 residents of Escondido, and about half of those are Latino. There is no record of how many people living in Escondido are illegal immigrants.

The council will vote on the ordinance next Wednesday.
