Thread: Fact Check for Speech

My husband is going to be doing a speech on the 287(g) program in a small town that has an illegal immigration problem. I was wondering if anyone here might be able to list the main points of the 287(g) program ...

What exactly it's meant to do, when the law was approved by Congress, how effective it's been in other places that have it, etc. Anything important about it that should be included.

I read somewhere that 287(g) is more for larger cities, so is that true, and if so, what similar-type programs are available for smaller towns?

Both our city and county applied for 287g last year.

We did what you are doing; information compiled on it's benefits, ease of application, just exactly what is it... Look into how your council works. We had to present to the Public Safety committee first. Once they approved the move it was presented to the city council for a vote. Your police chief may be able to just apply with out the council's approval.

However, we hear the counties are getting approved sooner then any cities. Perhaps a group of you could go meet with your county sheriff and make a presentation to him.

Our sheriff applied and then announced. A VERY smart move. Waukegan got huge heat and protest when discussing whether to apply. To name a few we had Ted Hayes, William/Alipac, Emma Lozano and various 4000 protesters in town.

Presently our sheriff has had the computer equipment delivered from ICE and is hooked up to D.C. He hasn't officially heard, apparently, if he gets the training or not. Or has not told us yet.

Check out the CAP -criminal alien program. There is a town in Texas that used that successfully. Many illegal aliens moved out of town. Start here on alipac and do some research on the net.

The local police utilizing 287(g) are trrained in identifying illegal aliens through an analysis of thier documents and via trained interviewing of suspects. They are trained in proper application of law so as to aviod misteps and illegal actions during the identification and retention process. Once an IA is identified, they are held in a detention center for transfer to ICE and ICE is then notified for pick up.

Before they had 287(g) authority, if an officer stopped a driver and found a car of suspected illegal immigrants he would sometimes have to wait hours for ICE to arrive and take over, Watkins said in an interview. That would prevent the officer from doing other work, and sometimes the officer would be called away and the illegal immigrants would be free to go, he said. Now the officers can put illegal immigrants in custody and begin the deportation process."
