FEDS BUST ILLEGAL ALIEN SEX RING

Feds Bust Illegal Immigrant Sex Ring

The Washington Post ran a February 1, 2007 story about a prostitution ring in Maryland, which left readers with the impression that American citizens were transporting illegal alien women across the U.S. and exploiting them for sexual purposes. In fact, the prostitution ring was itself run by illegal immigrants.

The omission was typical of the tendency by the Post and other media outlets to portray illegal aliens as victims, rather than perpetrators, of crime. This is how media bias works in real life.

What makes this example of media bias even worse is that reporter Steve Vogel must have decided that including the fact that three of those who have pled guilty of running the prostitution ring were here illegally was either unimportant or took away from the message of his article. Or perhaps he simply did not take the time to gather the information before writing his story. I called Vogel to ask if those who were charged with running the prostitution ring were in the country illegally, but my call was not returned.

However, after talking to Marcy Murphy, the Public Affairs Specialist for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, I was able to quickly find out that three of those who have pled guilty in the case had, indeed, entered the U.S. illegally.

Vogel’s brief story in the Washington Post was part of a Maryland Crime Briefing about a prostitution ring run by 65-year-old Olinda Aparicio, with help from her daughters Elsy Aparicio and Dorinalda Aparicio, her son Eliazor Aparicio, her sister Rosibel Aparicio Jandres, and her brother-in-law Manuel Jandres. The family, all of whom have pled guilty to involvement in the prostitution ring, transported hundreds of women from New York and New Jersey to work as prostitutes in Maryland. As Vogel put it, “The women, mostly illegal immigrants, operated from apartments and houses” in Maryland.

But concerning those who ran the prostitution ring, he simply wrote that “The Aparicio family members would pick the women up in New York and New Jersey and drive them to Maryland to work as prostitutes for a week at a time.” He omitted the fact that Dorinalda, Eliazor and Elsy Aparicio were also illegal aliens.

A story about a prostitution ring consisting of several hundred girls in Maryland is a big story. A prostitution ring of several hundred illegal alien women, run by illegal aliens, is a bigger story. That’s the story the Post concealed from its readers.

The reason for the omission is simple: the paper does not want its readers to think negatively of illegal aliens. It wants the public to think illegal aliens are all coming here for a better life and to contribute to the public good.

This kind of bias helps explain why the illegal alien problem is out of control.

    MARYLAND BRIEFING
    Thursday, February 1, 2007; Page B05

    Sentences in Prostitution Ring

A 65-year-old Gaithersburg woman who pleaded guilty to transporting prostitutes to Maryland with her children and other relatives was sentenced yesterday to 15 months in prison.

According to a plea agreement presented at U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, Olinda Aparicio conspired with her daughters Elsy Aparicio and Dorinalda Aparicio, her son Eliazor Aparicio, her sister Rosibel Aparicio Jandres and her brother-in-law Manuel Jandres to transport hundreds of women from New York and New Jersey to Maryland for work as prostitutes.

The women, mostly illegal immigrants, operated from apartments and houses in Gaithersburg, Germantown, Langley Park and Wheaton, authorities said. The Aparicio family members would pick the women up in New York and New Jersey and drive them to Maryland to work as prostitutes for a week at a time, officials said.

Olinda Aparicio pleaded guilty in November to conspiracy to transport women for prostitution purposes. The other family members have also pleaded guilty to charges in connection with the case and await sentencing, according to the office of the U.S. Attorney for Maryland.

ADDITIONAL DEFENDANT AND CHARGES ADDED IN SUPERSEDING INDICTMENT OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY PROSTITUTION RING

Money Laundering and Aggravated Identity Theft Added to Indictment

GREENBELT, Maryland - A federal grand jury yesterday returned a superseding indictment charging eight individuals with crimes committed in connection with transporting illegal aliens from New Jersey and New York to Maryland to engage in prostitution and sexual activity, and harboring the aliens for financial gain.

The six-count indictment charges Elsy Aparicio, age 43; Eliazor Gonzalez Aparicio, age 29, Dorinalda Aparicio, age 34, and their mother, Olinda Aparicio, age 64; all of Gaithersburg, Maryland; Jair Francis, age 32, of Wheaton, Maryland; Rigo Diaz, age 31, of Gaithersburg, Maryland; Manuel Jandres, age 38, and his wife Rosibel Aparacio Jandres, age 44, both of Germantown, Maryland, with conspiring to transport individuals in interstate commerce with the intent that such individuals engage in prostitution and sexual activity; and conceal and harbor illegal aliens from detection.

Specifically, the indictment alleges that beginning at least in February 2004 to July 2005, the defendants conspired to employ prostitutes, the vast majority of whom were aliens unlawfully present in the United States. The defendants allegedly rented apartments and/or purchased homes in Maryland where they operated places of prostitution, and arranged to transport women from various locations in New York and New Jersey to Maryland, typically on Monday mornings, with the intent that these women engage in prostitution. They arranged to transport the women back to New York and New Jersey, typically on Sunday evenings.

The indictment further alleges that Elsy Aparicio, Eliazor Aparicio and Olinda Aparicio paid Jair Francis for information about law enforcement activity related to their prostitution business. Francis is alleged to have provided information to these defendants concerning law enforcement inquiries about prostitution businesses at the Georgian Woods Apartments in Wheaton, Maryland.

The new counts in the indictment allege that Elsy Aparicio, Manuel Jandres, Rigo Diaz and Rosibel Aparicio Jandres conspired to and committed money laundering by using the proceeds of the prostitution ring to purchase vehicles used in the transportation of the women, knowing that the purchases were designed to conceal the source of the funds. Further, the indictment alleges that Elsy Aparicio and Rigo Diaz purchased property using the proceeds of the prostitution ring, and alleges that Manuel Jandres and Rosibel Aparicio Jandres sold property bought with the illegal funds, in order to conceal the source of the funds.

The indictment further alleges that Jair Francis used the name and social security number of another person to lease in that person’s name, without that person’s permission, an apartment that was used as a place of prostitution, as part of the conspiracy to harbor an alien for financial gain.

Each defendant faces a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release for conspiracy to transport the aliens for prostitution purposes. Each defendant faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release for conspiracy to harbor illegal aliens for financial gain. Elsy Aparicio, Manuel Jandres, Rigo Diaz and Rosibel Aparicio Jandres face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine on the money laundering conspiracy charge. Elsy Aparicio and Rigo Diaz face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine on one of the money laundering charges. Manuel Jandres and Rosibel Aparicio Jandres faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on the other money laundering charge. Jair Francis faces a minimum mandatory two years in prison consecutive to any sentence on the harboring conspiracy charge, and a $250,000 fine for aggravated identity theft.

An indictment is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by indictment is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceedings.

MOTHER SENTENCED FOR CONSPIRACY TO TRANSPORT HUNDREDS OF PROSTITUTES TO MONTGOMERY AND PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTIES

Most of the Prostitutes Were Illegal Aliens Transported from New York and New Jersey

Greenbelt, Maryland - Olinda Aparicio, age 65, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, was sentenced today to 15 months in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release for conspiracy to transport hundreds of women for prostitution purposes to Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, announced United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein. U.S. District Judge Alexander Williams, Jr. also ordered that Aparicio forfeit the residence located at 486 West Deer Park Road, Gaithersburg, Maryland; one silver 2000 BMW 323; and $8,185 in cash seized on November 16, 2005.

According to the plea agreement presented to the court, from April 2003 to November 16, 2005 Olinda Aparicio conspired with her daughters, Elsy Aparicio and Dorinalda Aparicio a/k/a “Dorinalda Aparicio Gonzalez,” her son Eliazor Aparicio, her sister Rosibel Aparicio Jandres, her brother-in-law Manuel Jandres, and Jair Francis, to transport hundreds of women from New York and New Jersey to Maryland and employ them as prostitutes.

The conspirators communicated with the women by cellular telephone at least a week prior to their travel to Maryland, and scheduled them to work in at least 15 places of prostitution that they operated, including apartments and houses in Gaithersburg, Germantown, Langley Park and Wheaton. The conspirators picked the women up early on Monday mornings at various pre-arranged locations in New York and New Jersey and dropped them off in Maryland where they worked as prostitutes for a week at a time. A doorman collected money from customers and provided security for the prostitutes. The conspirators provided the prostitutes with food and supplies for a set weekly fee. Olinda Aparicio used her name to acquire apartments and cell phones for use in the prostitution business and sold lingerie and shoes to the prostitutes. The vast majority of the women they employed as prostitutes were aliens unlawfully present in the United States.

Olinda Aparicio pleaded guilty on November 13, 2006. Elsy Aparicio, age 31, of Gaithersburg; Eliazor Aparicio, age 31, of Wheaton; Dorinalda Aparicio, age 36, of Gaithersburg; and Manuel Jandres, age 40, and Rosibel Jandres, age 45, both of Germantown, Maryland, pled guilty to the same charge and face a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Elsy Aparicio also faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release for money laundering conspiracy.

Jair Francis, age 33, of Wheaton, Maryland was convicted on December 19, 2006 of conspiracy to transport women for prostitution purposes, conspiracy to harbor illegal aliens and aggravated identity theft. Francis faces a maximum sentence of five years for the prostitution conspiracy; 10 years for conspiracy to harbor illegal aliens, and a mandatory two years in prison consecutive to any sentence on the charge of aggravated identity theft. He is scheduled to be sentenced on March 16, 2007 at 9:30 a.m.

That is awfully close to Washington D.C.!

Has anyone ascertained the true nature of the "coincidental proximity" of this "ring" to our nations' lawmakers?
