    Five dead 'were army workers'

    The Australian | September 5 2005

At least five people shot dead by police as they walked across a New Orleans bridge yesterday were contractors working for the US Defence department, according to a report by The Associated Press.

A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers said the victims were contractors on their way to repair a canal, the new agency said, quoting a defence Department spokesman.

The contractors crossing the bridge to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain, in an operation to fix the 17th Street Canal, according to the spokesman.

The shootings took place on the Danziger Bridge, across a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain to the Mississippi River.

Early on Sunday, Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley of New Orleans said police shot at eight people, killing five or six.

No other details were immediately available.

This report is false. They were not army workers.

Well sounds like that news source is out in left field. Just now had it on the news again that the corp guys had a police escort. That the corp folks were shot at and police responded killing most of said bad guys.

Will see if we can find a US news story on line reference it.

Police Shoot 8 on New Orleans Bridge

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Police shot eight people carrying guns on a New Orleans bridge Sunday, killing five or six of them, a deputy chief said. Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley said the shootings took place on the Danziger Bridge, which connects Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.

    Eastern New Orleans shootout

New Orleans Police officers sent up a cheer Sunday with a report that their colleagues had engaged in a shootout with an armed group on Danziger Bridge in eastern New Orleans, with none of the cops hit and five of the suspected marauders wounded. No word was available on the condition of the wounded.

Were these unarmed contractors or actual US Army engineers that were shot at by the gang?

I think that the contractors should be required to wear US Army uniforms but with some sort of special insignia indicating they are civilian employees so we can avoid friendly fire incidents in the future. Before the US Army Telegraph Corps was merged into the Signals Corp in the Civil War its civilian members were required to wear US Army uniforms with a special brassard saying they were civilians.

It seems from most of the news reports that they were contractors with a police escort. Imagine what would have transpired had they not had the escort!

"contractors should be required to wear US Army uniforms " doing so would indicate they were combatants which they are not.
