EXCLUSIVE — Five U.S. border agents were shot, including one fatally, during an altercation with drug smugglers off the coast of Puerto Rico early Thursday morning, the Washington Examiner has learned.

The shoot-out happened 14 miles off the coast of northwestern Puerto Rico. First responders surged resources to the island to life-flight agents to hospitals.
The agents were from U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Air and Marine Operations arm. AMO agents work the air and sea to patrol for human and drug smugglers.
