CLAREMONT - An exhibit of student art and photographic work featuring day laborers will open Saturday evening at Pitzer College.

A reception for "Everyday Faces of Day Laborers" will take place from 5 to 9 p.m at Pitzer College's Grove House, 1050 N. Mills Ave.

The free reception is open to the public and will include speakers, entertainment and food.

The exhibit focuses on the lives of immigrants workers and was organized by members of a sociology and Chicano studies class, taught by Pitzer professor Jose Calderon.

As part of the exhibit, two day laborers will also be recognized, Calderon said.

Jose Fernando Pedraza died earlier this year after he was hit by a car in a collision in the area of Arrow Route and Grove Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga.

Pedraza, a day laborer, was at a rally calling for the establishment of a day labor center at the same time an anti-illegal immigration protest was taking place in the same area.

Also being recognized will be Francisco Lopez, 79, who is the oldest worker at the Pomona Economic Opportunity Center, also known as the Pomona Day Labor Center.

The exhibit will continue until Nov. 28 at the Pitzer College Grove House and the Gold Center Dolores Huerta Room.
