Horlick students rally for immigrant rights

RACINE “ John Paul Torres held a cardboard gravestone in his hand as he joined the nearly 100 students on Wednesday gathered outside the entrance to Horlick High School.

The words on Torres' gravestone, "My name is Enrique and I came here to work, not to die," were meant to represent one of the hundreds of immigrants who die daily trying to make there way into the United States.

Two student groups, Students United in the Struggle and Students United for Immigrant Rights, helped organize Wednesday's immigrant memorial service, held hours before a number of community members and students started a 40-hour fast to commemorate the immigrants who have died and continue to die.

Some students held wooden crosses in their hands, others wore red armbands to represent their plans to fast.

"We're not going to stop until something is done about it, because there are too many people who suffer," junior Bianca Quintero, 16, said after the rally. "I'm hoping that the government will create something positive for undocumented immigrants."

If it wasn't for her grandparents, who came here to look for a better future, Quintero said she wouldn't be here. Now that she is here, she looks forward to college and a career.

Quintero planned to fast with others starting Wednesday at the Racine office of Voces de la Frontera, an immigrant rights group.

"It's for a cause ¦ immigrants who die struggling for this country," Quintero said. "This country is built on immigrants."

Immigrant rights groups throughout the country, as well as in Racine, have grown impatient with the federal government's work on immigration reform.

"We've been waiting for years for an opportunity to have something better," said Viviana Pastrana, 18, president of Students United for Immigrant Rights. "Millions of us marched for change last year and now it's time for action."

As she wrote her speech for Wednesday's rally, sophomore Margarita Jaramillo, 16, said she thought about her grandfather, and other family members, who came to America from Mexico.

"They didn't even get to finish their education," Jaramillo said. "They had to struggle to get here. Now that their here, they're still struggling."

Sandra Gomez, 15, said she has not experienced many of the difficulties that immigrants, like her family members, have experienced. However, she does see, and hear, how community members and others feel about the immigration issue.

She'd like to see people try harder to understand why immigrants struggle to get here. She'd like to do something to help undocumented immigrants who are here get their papers.

Gomez, a sophomore, was happy with Wednesday's turnout, which also included a number of community members.

"It made me feel good to see that a lot of people care about this issue," Gomez said

Not the surnames of each of the individuals interviewed. Hmmm.......wonder if they share something (Latino) with 80% of the criminal aliens invading our country.

And the realy sad part to this storyI would guess these people dont know the true meaning of taps.

It gives me great anger that american police alow this to go on in our country these people are Illegal

What about the 12-24 Americans that die every day at the hands of illegals? They don't want to talk about that.

Hero`s that died attempting to break the Laws. How Heroic can you get?

The arrogance of these people just infuriates me. They come in here illegally, and then demand that we change our laws to suit them. That's one of the problems with granting amnesty. The more amnesties we give, the more the army of pro-illegals grows as they all want their family members to be given legal status.

I'll tell you what, sweetheart. Instead of protesting here, you should be protesting the corrupt and inefficient governments south of the border that do not provide opportunities for their own people. These people shoot their big mouths off here and make all kinds of demands when they are meek and cowardly in the countries they should be protesting in.

It was their choice to come here. No one forced them to come to the U.S.

Noone ask them either, at least we did`nt.
