I say we get ready for round two on Monday and let our people rest, spend time with their families, clean house, cut grass, and do the things that many of our core troops have put off for two weeks.

CONGRESSWOMAN LUCILLE ROYBAL-ALLARD AND CONGRESSMAN HOWARD BERMAN SPONSOR LEGISLATION TO ELIMINATE BARRIERS TO COLLEGE FOR IMMIGRANT STUDENTS

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34, D) and Congressman Howard Berman (CA-28, D) announced today (March 1, 2007) the introduction of the “American Dream Act" (HR 1275) which will provide a path to legal immigration status for college-bound children who have lived most of their lives in this country, but do not have legal immigration status. Their Republican colleague, Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart (FL-21, R) joined the Los Angeles representatives in this bipartisan effort.

Under the American Dream Act, qualified students would be eligible for temporary legal immigration status upon high school graduation that would lead to permanent legal residency if they go to college or serve in the military. The American Dream Act would also eliminate a federal provision that discourages states from providing in-state college tuition to immigrant students who have long resided in their states. Despite meeting state residency requirements, immigrant students in certain states are charged out-of-state or international tuition rates, which can be triple the cost of in-state tuition.

"Each year, hard working and talented students graduate from U.S. high schools, but due to their immigration status and despite having lived in this country for many years, face enormous barriers to furthering their education," Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard said. "The American Dream Act recognizes the tremendous fortitude of these immigrant students who have overcome great obstacles in their lives to excel in school and dream of obtaining a better life through a college education."
Congresswoman Roybal-Allard said the bipartisan initiative would also strengthen our nation’s workforce. "As a country, we can only gain from passage of the Dream Act. We hinder our competitiveness in the global economy by keeping large numbers of U.S.-educated immigrant young people out of college, and ultimately the skilled workforce, solely because of decisions made years ago by adults who brought their families to this country illegally,â€

Letter from the Hispanic Congressional Caucus to Senator Durbin Supporting the DREAM Act

    September 20, 2007
    The Honorable Richard Durbin
    309 SenateH art Office Building
    Washington, DC 20515

    Dear Senator Durbin:

On behalf of the Congressiona Hispanic Caucus, we applaud your unrelenting and steady commitment to calling on Congress to support and pass the DREAM Act.

Without your advocacy on behalf of deserving DREAM beneficiaries, hundreds of thousands of successfusl tudents would have to face, because of our brokeni mmigration policies, an indefinite future of uncertainty and further obstacles to their future success.

Like you, we are continuously moved by the compelling and too often tragic stories of undocumented high schools tudents who, at a young age, were brought to and raised in the U.S., the only country they have ever really known. These kids were brought here through no fault of
their own, have broken no laws, done well in school and deserve to continue to reach for and realize their dreams.

Please count on our support as you work in the Senate to amend the defense authorization bill to include this important legislation.

As you are aware, the DREAM Act is also included in the CHC's immigration reform bill, the STRIVE Act (H.R. 1645). We remain fully committed to comprehensive immigration reform and hope action in the Senate on the DREAM Act will also serve to build greater momentum in Congress to fix our nation's broken immigration system. We cannot afford to waste immigrant students'talent or dismiss their futures, nor should we forget about their parents, families and the broader community of undocumented who are working hard and contributing to the United States.

We would like to meet with you at your earliest convenience to discuss how the CHC can help to successfully pass the DREAM Act and meaningful immigration reform in the House and Senate, and ensure that the President signs the DREAM Act into law. To affange the meeting, please
contact Angela Ramirez, Executive Director of the CHC , at (202) 225-2410.

    Sincerely,

    Joe Baca

    AgJOBS and DREAM Act Sign-On Letter(72 KB - 9/20/2007)
A sign-on letter from over 70 national and 200 state labor, business, faith-based, civil rights, and immigrant advocacy organizations, calling on Congress to pass AgJOBS (S. 340 and H.R. 371) and the DREAM Act (S. 774 and H.R. 1275). AILA Doc. No. 07092062.

    September 19, 2007

    Dear Senator:

Our communities will not rest until Congress enacts a comprehensive immigration reform bill that deals with all of the problems with our broken immigration system, and provides a path to earned legalization for every undocumented worker. In the meantime, with the failure to advance a broader bill in the Senate and polarization in the House over appropriations amendments, we feel it is crucial that Congress show it can do more than simply debate harsh enforcement measures. There are two
bills now before Congress that, if passed, will demonstrate that our lawmakers have not abandoned the need to fix our broken immigration system. We, the undersigned labor, business, faith-based, civil rights, and immigrant advocacy organizations, call on Congress to pass these immigration bills at the earliest possible opportunity, and certainly before the session ends.

The DREAM Act (S. 774 and H.R. 1275) allows high-achieving young people who were brought to this country as children to earn permanent legal status over many years, if they continue their education in college or the military, show good character, and meet other requirements. This
bipartisan bill would help the country by allowing talented individuals who have grown up here to fully contribute to the U.S. according to their abilities.

AgJOBS (S. 340 and H.R. 371) is supported by both agricultural producers and farm workers. It addresses employers’ need for a stable, legal workforce while providing undocumented farm workers with a path to legalization, if they meet many requirements and continue working on our nation’s farms. This bipartisan bill would help the U.S. by keeping our farms in operation and providing American households with access to safe, homegrown food. We also oppose punitive immigration “enforcementâ€
