Suspect arrested in beating of San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow: Report

    BY NINA MANDELL
    DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

    Sunday, May 22nd 2011, 1:32 PM

A man suspected in the high-profile beating of San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow at Dodgers stadium on March 31 is in custody, Los Angeles police sources told the LA Times.

The arrest comes after a month of public appeals from the Dodgers and Los Angeles police for anyone with information to come forward.

Sources told the Times that police came early Sunday morning to an apartment complex in West Hollywood and arrested the occupants of one apartment, including a man who resembled one of the suspects in the sketches plastered on billboards around town. He did not appear to resist arrest.

Stow, a father of two, was assaulted while leaving the opening day game between the Dodgers and Giants by two young men.

He suffered a severe head fracture and injury to his frontal lobe.

Weeks after the attack, he is still in the hospital and his long-term prognosis is unclear. But he was transferred to another hospital last week and has shown improvement, KTLA-TV reported.

The tragic attack turned into a public relations nightmare for the Dodgers, whose owners have already been in the news as they fight a bitter divorce battle. They increased security measures, cancelled beer specials and held a fundraiser to raise money for Stow's medical expenses.

The arrest came only days after Los Angeles police said at a press conference they had 17 detectives working full time on the case and were sifting through more than 200 tips

By Jorge L. Ortiz, USA TODAY

A suspect in the Dodger Stadium beating of San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow has been arrested, the Los Angeles Timesreports.

According to a story in the newspaper's web site, a SWAT team from the Los Angeles Police Department went to an East Hollywood apartment building at 7 a.m. today and called out the residents of unit No. 25.

Then they took into custody a man with a shaved head and tattoos who meets the description of police sketches of one of the suspects in the beating.

Stow, a paramedic from Santa Cruz and the father of two, was beaten by two assailants at the Dodger Stadium parking lot following the Giants-Dodgers game on Opening Day, March 31. Police said he was hit in the head from behind, then kicked and punched while on the ground.

Stow, 42, was put in a medically induced coma and doctors have said he sustained brain damage in the attack. He's no longer in a coma but remains in critical condition at San Francisco General Hospital, where he was transferred on Monday from L.A.

LAPD authorities are scheduled to address the media at a 4 p.m. PDT news conference in the Dodger Stadium parking lot.

The Giants released a statement Sunday saying, "Today's arrest in the Bryan Stow case is welcome news in what has been a very difficult time for the Stow family. We commend the Los Angeles Police Department for their hard work and we are confident that they will continue to dedicate themselves until all of those responsible for this senseless act of violence have been brought to justice.''

The case has garnered widespread publicity and the reward fund for information leading to the arrests of the assailants has increased to $200,000. Their sketches are prominently displayed in some 200 billboards throughout L.A.

Security at Dodger Stadium has been beefed up since the attack, with a heavy police presence especially felt at last week's Dodgers-Giants series

Tip led police to suspect in Dodger Stadium beating

    May 22, 2011 | 11:42 am

A tip from a parole agent led Los Angeles police to the man suspected of being one of the two assailants in the brutal beating of Giants fan Bryan Stow at Dodger Stadium, police sources said.

At about 7 a.m. Sunday, a Los Angeles police SWAT team descended on an East Hollywood apartment building with a warrant in hand. Using loudspeakers and with guns drawn, officers called out to the occupants of Apt. 25, said the building’s manager Maritza Camacho.

BillboardInside, along with several other people, was one of the men police suspect in the March 31 beating that left Stow with brain damage. One by one, the occupants emerged, Camacho said. The man taken into custody had a bald head and tattoos on his neck and arms, she said, a description that appeared to match the vague sketches released by police of one of the two suspects. She added that he did not appear to resist being taken into custody.

Several police sources, who requested their names not be used because the investigation was ongoing, confirmed that the man taken into custody was one of the two suspects in the beating. Police officials declined to give details, including the name of the suspect.

Stow, 42, a father of two, was walking through the Dodger Stadium parking lot with two friends after the Dodgers’ opening-day victory over San Francisco when he was brutally assaulted. Stow, who lives in Santa Cruz and worked as a paramedic in Santa Clara, was wearing Giants apparel, police said, and two young men began taunting him. One of the assailants blindsided Stow with blows to the back and head, police said.

The two assailants repeatedly kicked and punched Stow while he was on the ground. Stow's friends attempted to help, and were also punched and kicked before the attackers fled in a car driven by a woman wearing an Andre Ethier jersey. Police said it appeared there also was a 10-year-old boy in the car.

The incident drew intense scrutiny from around the world on the beleaguered Dodgers organization -- which has struggled to deal with a segment of its fan base that police say is dominated by gang members -- and spurred an intense hunt for the attackers.

Working off of hundreds of tips from anonymous callers, police chased leads that resulted in dead ends. Several potential suspects have been questioned and released after police determined they were not involved.

As more time passed without an arrest, the reward fund grew to more than $200,000 and the suspects' sketches were plastered on about 200 billboards around the L.A. area.

Ultimately, a parole agent contacted LAPD detectives on the case, alerting them to his suspicions that a parolee under his supervision may have been one of the attackers. From that tip, police turned their focus on the man taken into custody Sunday. Officials declined to elaborate on why the parole agent came to suspect the man. Police also did not say what they learned about the man that allowed them to obtain a search warrant for the apartment.

Police officials said they also served a warrant at a second location nearby to the apartment where they found the man. It appeared that police believed the second location was tied to the man taken into custody and was not linked to the second suspect, who remained at large Sunday.

Camacho said that the man taken into custody Sunday morning had not been a longtime resident of the East Hollywood apartment building, but she had begun to see him coming and going in the last few months. She said a woman, her husband, their two adult children, and the woman’s brother lived in the two-bedroom unit. Police detained the other people who were in the apartment Sunday morning, Camacho said.

Stow remains in critical condition at San Francisco General Hospital, where he was moved last week from County-USC Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Doctors in San Francisco told reporters Stow had opened his eyes but that his long-term recovery was far from certain.

The incident has brought scrutiny and negative media attention to the Dodgers, who are also in the midst of an ownership battle. Owner Frank McCourt is struggling to meet payroll, prompting Major League Baseball to seize all business and day-to-day operations of the team.

Despite a significantly increased police presence, attendance has lagged. At Wednesday's game against the Giants — the rival team's first visit back since the opening series — paid attendance was 30,421. Although that was the number of tickets sold, the 56,000-seat stadium was clearly more than half empty. The last time the Dodgers sold fewer tickets for a home game against the Giants was June 4, 1997, when they sold 30,357.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Police Chief Charlie Beck and Dodger officials are scheduled to hold a news conference at 4 p.m. Sunday at Dodger Stadium to discuss the case.

Suspect may have tried to conceal identity with new tats

Thank God they got one of these cowards.... now they need to find the rest of the low- lifes Involved. Suspect in Bryan Stow beating may have tried to conceal identity with new tattoos
Following a morning raid and several hours of questioning, LAPD detectives on Sunday afternoon formally arrested a man on suspicion of being one of the two assailants in the brutal beating of Giants fan Bryan Stow at Dodger Stadium.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck, speaking at a news conference, declined to name the suspect, saying his identity will be made public when he is booked Sunday evening.

Several police sources confirmed the identity of suspect to the Los Angeles Times. The Times is not identifying the 31-year-old man at the request of senior Los Angeles Police Department officials, who said it could compromise a fast-moving search for the second assailant and the woman who drove the men away from the stadium.

The suspect in custody has at least three prior convictions, a source close to the investigation said. He was convicted of attempted robbery in 1998, robbery in 1999, and firing a weapon in a public place in 2005, according to the source.

Early Sunday, a Los Angeles police SWAT team took the man into custody on suspicion that he is one of two assailants who blindsided Stow in the stadium parking lot on March 31 following the season opener between the rival teams. Stow suffered brain damage in the attack and remains hospitalized.

The trail that led police to the suspect hinged on a set of fresh tattoos on the man's neck, said the source, who asked that his name not be used because of the ongoing investigation.

Police were tipped off to the man's possible involvement by his parole agent, law enforcement sources said. The police source said the suspect had attended a meeting with his parole agent shortly after the attack, and the agent noticed that the suspect resembled a police sketch of one of the assailants.

Things fell into place last week when another parolee was detained as a possible suspect in the beating, according to the source. Detectives determined that that man had not been involved in the attack, but the detention led several parole agents to discuss the case amongst themselves. One of them voiced his suspicion that a different parolee under his supervision might be involved, the source said. It is unclear whether the parole agent had passed on his suspicions to police immediately after he met with the suspect and was simply reiterating them last week or whether he had neglected to say something after the meeting.

Regardless, the parole agent called the parolee back in for another meeting last week. When he arrived, the agent noticed that the parolee had recently added several tattoos which covered most of his neck, the source said. That led authorities to suspect that the man was trying to cover up an older tattoo on his neck that witnesses had described to police.

After the meeting, detectives showed photo lineups that included the suspect to three witnesses. All three identified the man as one of the attackers, the source said.

While detectives continued to pull together their case, a surveillance team tailed the suspect throughout the weekend until 7 a.m. Sunday, when SWAT officers descended on the apartment building on Mariposa Avenue where the man had been staying in recent weeks. Using loudspeakers and with guns drawn, officers called out to the occupants of apartment 25, said the building’s manager, Maritza Camacho.

Police identify arrested suspect in Giants fan Bryan Stow beating LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A suspect has been taken into custody in the beating of a Giants fan at the Los Angeles Dodgers season opener.

Giovanni Ramirez, 31, of Los Angeles, was arrested just after 7 a.m. Sunday at an apartment building in the 800 block of North Mariposa Avenue, an area just east of Hollywood. He was booked for assault with a deadly weapon and is being held on $1 million bail.

Authorities said they believe Ramirez is one of two attackers who severely beat Bryan Stow in a Dodgers Stadium parking lot on March 31. Stow, 42, has been in and out of a medically induced coma since the assault.

Ramirez was identified by authorities as the primary aggressor in the attack.

SWAT officers and detectives served two search warrants Sunday, one at the apartment where Ramirez was arrested and another at a home. Several people were detained for questioning and evidence was seized, including a Honda Civic believed to be the car in which the suspects fled.

Officials did not specify how many people were detained or whether they were male or female. Building manager Maritza Camacho told the Los Angeles Times that a SWAT team descended on the East Hollywood apartment with guns drawn.

Among the people marched out of the building was a man with a bald head and tattoos on his neck and arms, Camacho said, a description that appeared to match the vague sketches released by police of one of the two suspects. She added that he did not appear to resist being taken into custody.
Stow was relocated from the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center to San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center so he could be closer to his family.

The Giants released the following statement regarding the latest developments:

"Today's arrest in the Bryan Stow case is welcome news in what has been a very difficult time for the Stow family. We commend the Los Angeles Police Department for their hard work and we are confident that they will continue to dedicate themselves until all of those responsible for this senseless act of violence have been brought to justice. Our thoughts and prayers remain with Bryan Stow and his family and we thank the community for its tremendous support for the Stow family during this difficult time."

Police Chief Charlie Beck said recently that detectives are looking into about 500 leads in their search for the attackers.

Rewards totaling more than $200,000 have been offered for information leading to the suspects' arrests.

Anyone with information about the suspects is urged to call (877) LAPD-24-7.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
