Give all students a chance at citizenship
It was bound to happen, seems to me this is just a revised version of The Dream Act. No doubt some IA hugging politician will try to advance this idea soon. (Note: This is a readers response.)
Give all students a chance at citizenship
March 11, 2011
As we continue another year of debate over in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants, complete with the legal and moral issues, I wish to suggest to our representatives in the state legislature a different approach.
Why not propose a bill creating a partnership between Maryland and the federal government that would mandate that each non-resident student complete, as part of his or her college or technical school admission, the requirements for U.S. citizenship? Trained naturalization instructors certified by the United States government would educate students in the requirements of gaining citizenship. Students would work towards citizenship while they gained the academic credentials necessary to graduate a complete United States citizen.
I am sure many financial, regulatory and educational issues will need to be discussed to make this proposal work. It is a complicated issue. We will need to rethink our educational system and our immigration system while setting aside partisan politics to make this idea work. But it is no more radical than others that have been put forth.
I think we have forgotten that the end result should be educated graduates who will help guarantee a strong, economically sound country of loyal citizens.

That would mean that the Federal Government, my tax dollars, and the State government, someone in that state's tax dollars, will be funding a program provided for illegal foreign nationals that are here illegally?

riduculous
Even for an IA supporter this is ridiculous. Many foreign students enroll in American universites solely for an education. They have no desire to remain in the country. Forcing them to meet the requirements of citizenship would eliminate a large source of income for the universities.

Sorry, but we are dealing with the children of families who are trying to outnumber the American people by "outbreeding" us and are teaching their children that we, the horrible Americans, are oppressing their families. A deal like this would make about the same sense as Jews paying for the children of skinheads to go to school or paying for the children of jihadists to go to school-clearly not in the best interest of those paying for the education. It's a shame children have to get caught in the crossfire of this issue, but we mustn't be led to feel guilty about them because they will just grow up to hate us because of the indoctrination of their families. Illegals have taken the inch we gave them already and are now demanding a mile. They are not greatful as a whole for the gifts we've already given them at taxpayers' expense. Run from it.

Students, as well as many other immigrants, already have a chance to gain citizenhip, after legally residing in the US for 5 years. It's their choice wether to become US citizens or remain legal residents.
There is NO excuse for illegal aliens to "gain" US citizenship, they have violated every step to attaining citizenship and legal status. The only option open to them must be deportation!!Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Those who enter the USA illegally should be barrd from getting citizenship now and for years to come. It is clear they do not respect the laws of this nation, they lie cheat steal and will do anything to make money. That includes leaching off of the economy, prostitution, drugs, gangs, forgery and the list of crimes goes on and on. They gave up their right to citizenship when they entered illegally and refused to come here via legal methods.
