King is no embarrassment to him

DENISON, Iowa -- I find nothing embarrassing about 5th District Rep. Steve King. While I admit that I do not find myself agreeing with all of Congressman King's positions on every issue, I will further have to admit I agree with the vast majority of his positions.

I, for one, do not believe that the children of illegal residents of the United States are simply by being born here automatically citizens of the United States. The 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution does not specifically, or by implication, say that to be the case. The United States Supreme Court has never ruled that simply being born within the physical boundaries of the United States makes a person a citizen of the United States. Were that to be what the 14th Amendment says or intends to say, then any baby born of any traveler in the United States, whether having been deliberately born or accidentally born within our national boundaries, is a citizen of this country. Hogwash!

I do not feel that illegal residents, or the children of illegal residents, ought to be recipients of the same "rights and privileges" of people born in this country of legal citizens. I agree with Congressman King that this country needs to make the security of its borders, irrespective of where those borders might lie, to be absolutely secure as they can be made to be. If this country wishes to be taken seriously when it declares itself "a sovereign nation" and we make much of that terminology when we formally address other "sovereign nations," then we'd better hold all who would seek to enter this country subject to the laws of this "sovereign nation."

Nope, Congressman King, you don't embarrass me in the least. -- William "Mick" Toal
