Latinobarometer signals that 7 of 10 latinoamericans are against immigrants.

Lima Peru, 16 abr (EFE).- Seven of ten Latin-Americans are against, non-citizen people or of different race living in their country, revealed today the survey "Opportunities of Regional Integration" carried out in 18 countries of the continent in 2007.

The poll, an initiative of the Andean Corporation of Promotion (CAF) and the organization Latinobarómetro, was presented today in Lima by the executive president of the CAF, Enrique Garcia, and Peruvian authorities.

Upon taking the issue of the attitude towards immigrants, the study found that only 24 percent are in favor of foreigners of the same race or ethnic group of citizens comming to live to their country.

15 percent are in favor of receiving people of poorer countries and 14 percent are in favor of foreigners of different race or ethnic groups.

The most open countries to the arrival of foreigners of the same race or ethnic group are Uruguay (41 percent) and Nicaragua (39 percent), while Costa Rica is the most against to that possibility (9 percent).

In turn, among the most open nations to the arrival of people of poorer nations, Uruguay appears again (27 percent), followed by Mexico and Nicaragua (both with 22 percent).

The most against this practice is Ecuador (4 percent) and Paraguay (7 percent).

On the possibility that foreigners of different race comming to live to their country, the most receptive are Uruguay (30 percent), Argentina, Colombia and Nicaragua (20 percent).

While the most against is Ecuador (3 percent) and Paraguay (7 percent).

The study affirmed that "Latin America does not seem to welcome immigrants".

It is possible to parse this information and figure out why those countries which are more open might be more welcoming.

The Uruguayans are across the Rio de Plata from Buenos Aires and get a lot of their economy's income by offering services to the Agentineans. Punta del Este, Uruguay is the Argentine tourists favorite weekend resort. Buenos Aires is where Uruguayans go to shop.

Paraguay is a country with a large Guarani Indian population but they have a high degree of assimilation. But is being is over run with poor unaculturated Bolivian moutain Indians.

Nicaragua after being ruled by Somoza and the Sandinistas is a highly underdeveloped country and hope for comparatively wealthy
    Costa Ricans to come in.

Mexicans see poorer immigrants as mostly passing through to take advantage of us Gringos and not permanent competition.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

    Richard:

Okay, I've read this post over and over.

Your point is what? South Americans have different economies. Sort of like states in America? I'm just not getting your point.

    Please clarify. Thanks.

From reading this article, it tells me that the majority of Latin Americans are racists. But then again, shouldn't each country be allowed to determine WHO they allow in?

The US allows people in without regard to race, as long as they go thru the proper channels.

Since my wife is from Argentina I kind of wonder who they surveyed to get the 30 percent who were receptive to immigrants. Most there are of Italian decent and trust me, they don't care much for anyone who is not white and of Italian or at least Spanish descent. You will have to look really hard to even find a black person in Argentina. Of all the Argentine's I have met they don't like Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, and especially Chile.

400,000 Colombians in Ecuador....several million Latin Americans now in Spain....better to have Euro's now then dollars.....better to send Euro's to back home then dollars...

So many Colombians were moving to Costa Rica that the government of Costa Rica made a visa requirement for Colombians. Before it was only a passport.

Remember, the multi nationals want open borders...

Why? Whats the big surprise? Latin-Americans are just like all the other people in the world. Most nations are very possessive of their homelands and are concerned who might want to immigrate into their country.

America has the same concerns, but allows more people than any other country in the world to come here legally. But we are the ones that get labeled as racist people.
RIP Butterbean! We miss you and hope you are well in heaven.-- Your ALIPAC friends
