GOP REPORTEDLY CONSIDERS DEFYING TRUMP ON MEXICO TARIFFS

10:41 AM 06/04/2019 | POLITICSJason Hopkins | Immigration and politics reporter

Republicans uncomfortable with the idea of a tariff war are reportedly mulling whether to vote against the president’s proposed tariff hikes against Mexico.
A number of congressional Republicans could join their Democratic counterparts in a vote to block President Donald Trump if he moves forward with threats to slap tariffs on all Mexican goods, according to a report from the Washington Post.
Such a move would serve as a sharper GOP rebuke to the president than the failed attempt earlier this year to revoke his emergency border declaration.
Similar to the resolution condemning the emergency declaration, a vote to block Trump’s tariffs would likely begin in the Democratic-controlled House and then move to the Senate, where enough Republicans could defect.
“I know he’s, sometimes in his frustration, expressed his intention to do certain things but after calm reflection and consultation with the members of the Congress has decided maybe to pursue a different course, so that’s what I hope would happen here,” Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn said to reporters on Monday.
Other Republican senators have also publicly expressed their disapproval of the plan.
“He’s a tariff guy,” Iowa Republican Sen. Joni Ernst stated Monday after speaking with the president. The Iowa lawmaker, who said she was “not pleased” about the tariff idea, pushed Trump not to move forward with the threat.
“There are going to be concerns expressed about whether this is the right way to get Mexico’s attention on the border security issue,” Senate Majority Whip John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota, said Monday. “It’s going to not be viewed favorably in my state, for sure.”

GOP skepticism follows the president’s announcement that he would impose incremental tariffs on all Mexican imports, unless they crack down on illegal immigration.
The Trump administration, under the plan, wold slap Mexican goods with a 5% tax beginning on June 10. This tariff would increase by 5% each month, potentially reaching a maximum of 25% by October. The president said the tariffs would be removed if Mexico demonstrates that it’s doing more to stop the record flow of illegal migration pouring through its borders and into the U.S.
Hoping to stave off a tariff war, top Mexican officials held a press conference at their embassy in Washington, D.C., on Monday, and delegations from both countries are set to begin negotiations on Wednesday.
Speaking alongside British Prime Minister Theresa May during a Tuesday press conference, Trump fired a warning shot when asked about the possibility of a GOP rebuke to his tariff proposal. (RELATED: Surge Of Bangladeshi Migrants With Bogus Passports Causing US To Rely On Dental Exams)
“I don’t think they’ll do that. If they do that, it would be foolish,” he said. “I think Mexico will step up and do what should have been done.”

JUST MORE PROOF MOST Republicans are NEO-COMMUNIST TRAITORS. That 5% Trump tariff threat is nothing more than leverage against the Mexicans on them controlling their Southern Border. Whether the Federal Mexican government can actually do that is in question? It would seem to not take a whole lot of effort and resources on their part to do so, but it appears more and more the Federal Government in Mexico City is powerless in most of it's states. The cartels control the state governments.

No surprise. They have defied the will of the American people for decades and created a disaster for our nation. They legislate for their donors and self interests despite claims. The borders would be fully secured and illegal immigration would have been ended a long time ago if motives were pure and the citizens were a priority.

Greed and corruption is rampant halls of Congress and across government at all levels. We keep hoping for “America First” representatives and get stabbed in the back when they legislate and craft bills. They get rich and gain power. The American people try to deal with the fallout in their communities and states in the millions and billions of dollars, lost jobs, injuries and death.

President Donald Trump warned Republicans Tuesday not to try and block his proposed tariffs on Mexico.

“No. I don’t think that they will do that,” Trump said. “I think if they do it is foolish, there’s nothing more important than borders, I’ve had tremendous Republican support.”
The Washington Post reported Monday night that Republicans in Congress had begun “discussing” the idea of blocking Trump’s proposed tariffs.
Trump reminded Republicans that he had a 94 percent approval rating in the Republican party.
“That’s an all-time record … I love records,” he added.
The president commented on the proposed tariffs on Mexico during a press conferencewith British Prime Minister Theresa May.
Trump said that the proposed tariffs had brought Mexico officials to the table and that negotiations would continue, but predicted that the tariffs would be enacted anyway.
He said it was “unacceptable” for Mexico to allow millions of Central American migrants through their country into the United States and that he “did not want to hear” that cartels were controlling the country.
“Mexico should step up and stop this onslaught into our country,” Trump said.

TRUMP and the NEO-COMMUNIST REPUBLICAN TRAITORS in Congress should STEP UP and STOP this onslught into our country. 2 or 3 of the cowardively Republican Congressional traitors have made a little noise about what's taking place.

Trump Threatens New National Emergency To Enact Mexico Tariffs

"The president is deadly serious about fixing the situation at the southern border."

The Trump administration has indicated that it may declare a second national emergency in order to implement new tariffs announced on Mexico, according to Senate Republicans, who announced the potential plan following a closed-door lunch with White House deputy counsel Pat Philbin and DOJ officials.

There was no word on the likelihood of this happening, however on Sunday, acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said that President Trump "is absolutely, deadly serious" about the tariffs, adding "I fully expect these tariffs to go on to at least the 5% level on June 10. The president is deadly serious about fixing the situation at the southern border."
The White House announced Thursday that the import tax will increase by 5 percentage points every month through October, topping out at 25%, unless Mexico takes significant action to stem the flow of migrants, mostly from Central America, who have surged to the U.S. border in recent months. -LA Times
As far as declaring a national emergency to enact the tariffs, "I think that was somewhat up in the air. …I think that's a distinct possibility but I don't think there's any definitive answer," said Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) following the lunch. Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) said that the administration is still "working through" whether it would even need to declare the national emergency in the first place, a move which would set up yet another clash with Congressional Democrats and Republicans opposed to the idea. "Tariffs are not real popular in the Republican conference," said Johnson."The way they put it was is they’re still working through all the details on it and they have not decided what their approach is going to be yet with regard to that, that was my understanding," said Rounds.
Trump says he will impose the tariffs on Mexico under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act as soon as next week unless Mexico cracks down on the flow of migrants from Central America across the southern border.
But declaring a second national emergency, after Trump used the tool earlier this year to sidestep Congress on border funding, would pave the way for a significant fight with Senate Republicans, who have publicly and privately voiced opposition to the tariffs.
A new national emergency declaration, GOP senators say, would set up a new resolution of disapproval vote in an attempt to block the tariffs from going into effect. -The Hill
"Within our own groups I think we recognize that we may very well have another vote coming up," Rounds added. Earlier this year, the Senate passed a resolution disapproving of Trump's emergency declaration along the US-Mexico border. Trump vetoed the measure and Congress could not override him. Senate GOP are mulling a similar resolution of disapproval if Trump once again declares a national emergency to implement the tariffs. According to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), there was "not much support" for the tariffs within the caucus.
Trump administration officials received an earful from senators during the closed-door GOP lunch, according to senators who attended the lunch.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said that there was "deep concern" within the meeting about the prospects of new tariffs against Mexico.
A GOP senator who attended the meeting said that roughly a half dozen senators spoke during the closed-door lunch, none of whom were supportive of new tariffs against Mexico.
The senator added that administration officials were warned during the lunch that they needed to count the votes on a potential resolution of disapproval because Trump could fall short. -The Hill
"I think it's fair to say … that every senator who spoke, and there were probably a half dozen, generally had the same point of view," said the GOP senator cited by The Hill. "Nobody was supportive, who spoke."

I don't really think the tariff idea in itself will work. However, it is a scare tactic that could get some results at the table. What the U.S. Senate is doing is undermining even that by sending a clear signal to Mexico that there is no need to worry because we won't let Trump do this. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

If Trump was DEADLY SERIOUS about fixing the border, he wouldn't have signed that TREASONOUS BUDGET DEAL in Feb.????? He was being briefed on the negociations on it and knew EXACTLY WHAT WAS IN IT. The NEO-COMMUNIST Republican TRAITORS knew what was in it also. Both knew the outcome of it and here we are today!!!!! ANY FOOL could also figure out the outcome. This scenerio was less than 4 months ago and I remember it well. What's going on today is a US/Central American version of the 2015 MERKEL GERMANY ISLAMIC INVASION. Many people, including myself, saw that immediately in Feb. after the details of that budget deal surfaced. Trump procliaming he's DEADLY SERIOUS about FIXING what he helped create less than 4 MONTHS AGO is a FARCE!!!!!
