The following article appeared in the Atlanta Journal Constitution on 7/20/05: A highway worker was killed and another injured Tuesday afternoon when they were struck by a rental truck while picking up trash on I-20 at the Newton-Walton County line. Authorities said both workers, who were working as contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation, were illegal immigrants. The one who was injured was a boy about 14 years old. The two were walking in front of a mower picking up trash on westbound I-20 when the truck drifted off the road, hitting one and then the other, officials said. The man was killed at the scene. The boy was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center, said Georgia State Patrol spokesman Larry Schnall. Neither worker had identification on him, and officials had not been able to identify either Tuesday night. "The workers at the scene didn't really know anything about the two. Or so they said," Schnall said. Authorities said charges are pending against the driver of the truck, whose name was not available. DOT spokesman David Spear said the agency will investigate the Hahira-based company that hired the workers. The company has done "intermittent" work for the department in the past, Spear said.
