The man who as president parried questions about his affair with Monica Lewinsky with style and a smile was driven to distraction Friday when hecklers insisted his wife lied about the 2012 attacks on the American compound in Benghazi, Libya. Four Americans died in the attacks.

Former President Bill Clinton was leading a rally in Bluffton, S.C., Friday, when a man who said he was a veteran complained about the Veterans Administration. Then the subject changed.

The man said he had seen Gold Star families “who have mourned.” He then added, “We had four lives in Benghazi killed and your wife tried to cover it up.”

The crowd groaned disapproval. The man, who said he was an ex-Marine, kept talking. Then Clinton thundered his response.

“I heard your speech. I heard your speech. Will you let me answer? I’m not your commander-in-chief anymore but if I were, I’d tell you to be more polite and sit down,” Clinton said.

As the man started yelling at Clinton, the former president grew angrier.

“Do you have the courage to listen to my answer? Don’t throw him out. Shut up and listen to my answer. I’ll answer it,” Clinton said.

Although the man was led out, the Benghazi question refused to die.

“Hillary lied over four coffins!” a woman in the crowd yelled out. “She lied and she lied to those families, so all those families are liars? I want to know. Did she lie?”

“Are you going to give me a chance to answer?” Clinton said.

“Answer. Did she lie?” the woman said.

“No,” Clinton responded.

“Those families are lying?” the woman asked.

“Will you listen to me?” Clinton responded.

The crowd, the woman and Clinton all began talking together.

“Are you afraid?” he asked, after demanding to know why she didn’t want to hear his response.

“No. I’m not afraid because I know you’re going to lie,” she said.

As the woman was led off by police, she got in the last words, calling out, “She lied!”
