House GOP Panel's IRS Probe Deepens

    Published on Apr 25, 2014
While the full Congress has not returned from its annual spring recess, House Republicans on the Oversight Committee yesterday broadened their probe into the improper targeting of conservative groups by the IRS.

The panel is questioning whether the Justice Department might have played a role.

According to the Washington newspaper the Hill, Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa and 16 other GOP lawmakers said that the Justice Department had shown interest in prosecuting tax-exempt Tea Party groups that were allegedly dishonest about their political activity.

This is being called the latest sign that Congressional Democrats pressured Obama administration officials into unfairly scrutinizing Tea Party groups.

The Republicans want the Justice Department to explain its apparent involvement in examining tax-exempt groups. They have requested an interview with Justice Department official Richard Pilger. The Republicans are curious about an e-mail conversation Pilger had with former IRS official Lois Lerner about potential prosecutions of conservative groups.

The conservative group Judicial Watch first released that email and other documents last week about the conversation between Pilger and Lerner.

That email conversation was reportedly suggested by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, a Rhode Island Democrat. The conversation apparently happened just two days before Lerner acknowledged and apologized for the IRS's scrutiny of Tea Party groups.

The Hill added, "Issa and the other Republicans, citing the newly released e-mails, want to know whether more senior officials at the Justice Department wanted Pilger to discuss the matter with Lerner."

Furthermore, Republicans believe the Justice Department had shown an interest in prosecuting tax-exempt groups for legal activities.

A letter to Attorney Gen. Eric Holder from Rep. Issa and other Oversight Committee Republicans stated: "The [Justice] Department's use of [an] alleged false statement on [a Tea Party] tax-exempt application is an unfortunate instance of prosecutorial 'gotcha,' targeting these victims for supposed 'lies' about activities that they are legally allowed to do."

According to these 17 House Republicans, the new emails between the Justice Department and the IRS demonstrate coordinated action among administration officials to target conservative nonprofit groups.

These matters constitute the latest signal that House Republicans are revving up their inquiry into the IRS—a popular target among their conservative base.

However, the GOP claims to have found no proof that the White House played a role in the IRS treatment of Tea Party groups.

As for Lerner, Rep. Issa and the Oversight panel voted this month to hold her in contempt. She formerly led an IRS division overseeing tax-exempt groups.

Meanwhile, the House Ways and Means Committee says that Lerner targeted Crossroads GPS, a prominent GOP group. Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp, a Michigan Republican, said his committee's Republicans asked Holder and the Justice
Department to take another look at whether Lerner should be prosecuted.

Oversight Committee Probes Justice Department Role in IRS Targeting

Requests documents and transcribed interview of DOJ official in wake of public revelation that DOJ corresponded with former IRS official Lois Lerner about prosecuting tax exempt status applicants
WASHINGTON – House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and sixteen Oversight Committee members asked Department of Justice Attorney General Eric Holder to produce documents and a Justice Department official for a transcribed interview to explain why his agency would consider prosecution of tax-exempt groups already improperly targeted by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Last week, Judicial Watch released IRS documents showing former IRS official Lois Lerner in contact with Justice Department about potential prosecution of tax-exempt groups.
A previously unreleased e-mail related to last week’s FOIA release by Judicial Watch reveals that the Justice Department employee did not reach out to Lerner on his own. Instead, Richard Pilger, Director of the Election Crimes Branch of the Department’s Public Integrity Section, noted via e-mail to Lerner on May 8th 2013, “I have been asked to run something by you.” The e-mail does not indicate who had asked Pilfer to contact Lerner. Additionally, the letter notes that the Department considered prosecuting these groups for actions that are legal for 501(c)(4) nonprofits under federal tax law – that is, engaging in political speech.
The members wrote: “Mr. Pilger’s communications with Ms. Lerner are also striking for their timing. They show that the IRS and the Justice Department were actively considering efforts to target tax-exempt organizations just two days before Ms. Lerner’s public apology for the targeting. This information certainly undermines the sincerity of Ms. Lerner’s apology, but it calls into question your reaction that targeting was ‘outrageous’ and ‘unacceptable.’ These comments ring hollow in light of evidence that your subordinates apparently colluded with the IRS to target nonprofit groups less than a week before.

    AND DON'T FORGET THE DEMOCRATS

Another damning email released as a result of the ongoing IRS investigation shows that at least 30 House Democrats were demanding the IRS investigate liberty and tea party groups. You can read the full letter here. But don't expect any of those who signed to ask for an IRS investigation into any liberal groups attempting to influence elections. That's the kind of "social welfare" these politicians like, encourage and support - because it helps them win elections.
