Sadly, there is no "official language" in the US and we need to enact laws to change this but when you mix this with the immigration debate, we tend to polarize some and turn off others.
English only laws in areas with "HISTORICAL" populations of native speakers of other languages tend to be seen as a throw back to the days of discrimination and seperateness. In Louisiana, a 1921 law which made English the official language of Louisiana was overturned when the southern part, made up of mainly french speaking Cajuns was dis-franchised and not allowed to vote! Children were punished for speaking French in school and made to kneel in rice for punishment. When the outcry began, the fight began and the treaty of 1803 was dusted off and when the outcry of the treaty violation became so much, the federal Court ruled English only law in Louisiana unconstiutional and it was noted that there was only a custom of speaking English in the USA and the treaty specified that the inhabitants could maintain their freedoms, language, customs and free practice of their religion as the treaty specified.
If you jump the gate, you can not stay, if you come and play by the rule, please stay and become a good American, we invite you. Learning English doesn't mean forgetting your heritage and background but weave it into the fabric for a stronger USA.
In areas of English Settlement (Anglophone) I understand why the school should not be forced to do something for the benefit of a few but in other areas of Non-English speaking majorities, the local dictates and common sense should rule out in favor of english and (???), for if you do not know English, how can you compete nationally? The question mark signifies the local language which predominates the area, it may be spanish, navaho, cherokee, french, finnish, (you fill it in but if a majority of the Parents vote for it, then it should be taught along with English.)

That would be Mexico, and do not the door hit you and your tribe of illiterate peasants in the posteriors on your way out!
If you dont want to speak English, get out! Illegal Hispanics have been here for over 20 years and still cant speak English? Whats the matter with them, besides being ILLEGAL ALIENS. Do they really think we are going to learn THEIR language? NEVER!RIP Butterbean! We miss you and hope you are well in heaven.-- Your ALIPAC friends

We should never in this country have to proclaim "English only!" It should be self-evident!
If any more is required to be said it would be:

WHAT the racial or ethnic group is does NOT matter; what matters is, do they put being an American FIRST?! If NOT, then they CANNOT be TRUE Americans! And, unfortunately, it seems that a LOT of HISPANICS fit THAT mold!
