How much is the Government making in unrefunded taxes?

It is tax time and when I start thinking about government revenue, I started thinking of illegals.

I am beginning to believe that tax revenue is the driver for most decisions in Washington, they are such empire builders.

Not all companies pay under the table and collect the taxes for the Government. there is a big pot of unclaimed money in the till and I haven't seen very many politicians that can leave a pot of money alone.... Social Security is a good example..

So, Illegals are coming here and they are working, using fake or stolen social security numbers so the tax revenue is collected and the Government just keeps it, it all gravy. No refunds, no deductions, they just get to keep it. The more that are here paying into the system, the more they keep. The states are stuck with the Medicaid, welfare and education drain.

With legal citizens, they don't get to keep as much because they have to follow tax laws and issue refunds.

Not all of these refunds are for illegals, but I notice that the states with the highest amount unrefunded are the states that have a lot of illegals. the chart is a little scewed here, click in the IRS link for a better view.

IRS Has $1.3 Billion for People Who Have Not Filed a 2005 Tax Return

    IR-2009-16, March 3, 2009

WASHINGTON — Unclaimed refunds totaling approximately $1.3 billion are awaiting over a million people who did not file a federal income tax return for 2005, the Internal Revenue Service announced today. However, to collect the money, a return for 2005 must be filed with the IRS no later than Wednesday, April 15, 2009.

Especially in these tough economic times, people should not lose out on money that is rightfully theirs," said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “People should check their records, especially if they had taxes withheld from their paychecks but were not required to file a tax return. They may be leaving money on the table, including valuable tax credits that can mean even more money in their pockets."

The IRS estimates that half of those who could claim refunds for tax year 2005 would receive more than $581. Some individuals may not have filed because they had too little income to require filing a tax return even though they had taxes withheld from their wages or made quarterly estimated payments. In cases where a return was not filed, the law provides most taxpayers with a three-year window of opportunity for claiming a refund. If no return is filed to claim the refund within three years, the money becomes property of the U.S. Treasury. For 2005 returns, the window closes on April 15, 2009. The law requires that the return be properly addressed, postmarked and mailed by that date. There is no penalty assessed by the IRS for filing a late return qualifying for a refund.

The IRS reminds taxpayers seeking a 2005 refund that their checks will be held if they have not filed tax returns for 2006 or 2007. In addition, the refund will be applied to any amounts still owed to the IRS and may be used to satisfy unpaid child support or past due federal debts such as student loans.

By failing to file a return, individuals stand to lose more than refunds of taxes withheld or paid during 2005. Many low-income workers may not have claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Generally, unmarried individuals qualified for the EITC if in 2005 they earned less than $35,263 and had more than one qualifying child living with them, earned less than $31,030 with one qualifying child, or earned less than $11,750 and had no qualifying child. Limits are slightly higher for married individuals filing jointly.

Current and prior year tax forms and instructions are available on the Forms and Publications web page of IRS.gov or by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676). Information about the Earned Income Tax Credit and how to claim it is also available on IRS.gov. Taxpayers who need help also can call the toll-free IRS help line at 1-800-829-1040.

How would they know how much the refund might be unless the person has filed before and they are using a previous year's estimate?

Maybe they are using a staright caculation based on pay alone.

If only the SS office had a website where one could check their name and SS number to see if there is any "extra" money sitting in there for them. No way for people to know these things though without every year filing tax returns through a major tax company that knows all the checks like H&R Block or some other place.

You can call the IRS and order a transcript of your reported income. I do this as a little check to make sure that I haven't forgotten something when I file You can also order a Social Security Statement.

My friend's cousin is married to an illegal and he literally has a tax #, he showed it to my friends. He is NOT legal, he flat out admitted that his green card is expired and said the IRS knew where he was. He also told them all about how he files his taxes every year and gets a refund.

Yup, and its considered perfectly legal right now for him to do so as he has a tax ID. Tax IDs don't expire as far as the SS is concerned. The SS doesn't care of keep track of someones legal status in the US to work, as long as a tax ID number or SS they are golden as far as the SS is concerned.

We really need the SS to be involved with ICE and the USCIS services. Stop the money and stop the illegals. After all they all come for money as money is the #1 factor be it a job, welfare benefits, education (education is money in the bank after all). Its also the #1 reason for immigrants to return home for lack of money.

thedramaofmylife, He won't be illegal if he stays married to this girl for two years or more and applies.....but I am sure he knew this when he got married.

This is such a bitter note for all of us. On one hand, the government gets to keep rebates that they do not deserve to have (since they always misuse OUR money), and the other hand is if illegals file and can get this back, it is stolen money, because I am sure some have figured out how to get all they can out of it (have a handful of kids and get EIC, plus so much more), and then this is more money in the pockets of the other thieves.

I just have to hope in the long run we will see complete divine justice. Vindication while we are toughing it out would be ideal, but sometimes you just don't get to see it and just have to trust it will eventually happen to those cheating their way through this life.
