Eagle, you are an American of Hispanic descent. Always keep in mind, as I'm sure you do, that the issues we face are far larger than any single ethnic group. Stand up to people, look them in the eye and state your case that your are fighting for your country. They will respect you even more, as I would.

I mean, I might be generalization an entire group, but that's just what I feel. I don't get the same feeling when approaching younger White people especially in my age group (20s) though so it's not really a racial thing. I really don't get the same uncomfortable feeling from Blacks or Asians in any age group.

Is this racial profiling or is it just nature. I think it is only natural for people to want to be around others who are like them. It's something that we just can't help. If you notice in nature....every species does this. You never see lions hang out with tigers or chimps hand out with gorillas. They feel more comfortable surrounded with their own. So while we may be told this is racism, it may be something that we are naturally inclined to do.

Except that we humans are a sigle species now. It's not like neanderthals, and homo ergastor are still running around loose on the planet. But what is still part of make up is tribalism. Tribes of people of similar characteristics were born grew lived and died with people who looked like them in general appearance. This has gone on for many thousands of years, up until the developement of technology that made it possible for man to travel great distances in a short period of time, and exposed people of different color, and different culture to one and other. Where does the prejudice come from then? Those who developed this ability to travel viewed themselves as superior. The people they came into contact with usually lived in more primitive technological societies, and were thought of as inferior, which created a stigma that we still live with today.

Put yourself in their position, and you are travelling for the first time to an island or another continent, having never traveled more than a few miles from your native surroundings prior to this, and lacking modern enlightenment, how would you view people of another color, or same color, but less advanced than you in terms of weapons, clothing, and travel? They would appear inferioir to you, even if they may possess a greater wisdom.

Hi SZinWestLA! I went to visit Walter Moore at his office on Wilshire blvd. this past Saturday with my mother. I wanted to sign the petition for Jamiel's law but I live in Glendale and I can't sign it nor can I vote for Walter Moore! I will however, circulate his flyers and spread the word about him. So sorry about the petition, I wish I could have signed it. My mother did though, so that's one more signature!

I certainly don't blame you. Kudos to you for helping the Shaw family. Is there a legitimate website that you or anyone else can point me to so I can sign for this law?

Yes, there's a legitimate website about Jamiel's Law; a link is included in my first post in this thread. No, you cannot sign for Jamiel's Law to be put on the ballot online. As per election/city standards, the signatures must be collected on paper by L.A. city residents.

I live in SoCal.. I have heard of Jamiels law and of course Walter Moore. Is this a ballot just for LA. I live in Ontario, so I don't know if I can sign this or not. If so, I will and so will my family. Also, I have given to Moores campaign even thought I can't vote for him.

Thanks for the contribution to Moore. I believe it's money well spent and that, as goes L.A., goes the rest of the state. But sorry, the ballot is for L.A. only regarding Jamiel's Law. I even have to be careful about not getting signatures from residents of incorporated little cities inside L.A. (such as Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Culver City, Glendale, Redondo Beach, etc.).

    SZ,

Why didn't you say "My wife is an immigrant"?

I thought of that ... about five or six seconds after the conversation ended.

Didn't they hire professional signature gatherers?
How close are they to the required number of signatures?

I'm not sure. I heard they would if they could raise the necessary money. From what I understand it costs $2.25 per signature if you use the signature gathering company. They were soliciting donations last week. I sent seventy five bucks. I also heard that there is a "wealthy donor" who has agreed to match every dollar that is contributed by others, up to 100 grand.

As to how close they are, they need a little over 20,000 more by the 5th of next month. At least that was the story that plopped into my e-mail account last week.

Very cool. I know it's got to be sort of frustrating to be living in the L.A. area and not being able to collect signatures or even contribute one. There are so few people actually interested in the topic that it's a royal waste that you're not able to add your name to the list. A lot of the folks I have repeatedly seen at Walter Moore rallies are coming in from OC. They can't vote for the guy and he wouldn't be their mayor, but it's just so great to have any SoCal politician speak honestly about crappy local politics and the immigration fiasco, that I guess it's worth the effort to them.

I would love to sign the petition, but I don't live in LA. I moved to Santa Clarita two years ago.

Most people with families leave Los Angeles for the cleanest suburb that they can find. Which usually means pretty far away. I am 40 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.

There are many Hispanics in Southern California who are firmly against illegal immigration. Maybe you could contact LAIR and Lupe Moreno. Lupe lives in Santa Ana but she might know some people in L.A. Another organization to contact would be You Don't Speak For Me. Col. Al Rodriguez has spoke about murders committed by illegals. There are probably some members of YDSFM in L.A.

I agree to that. And welcome to the group.
