Other sheriffs departments have not joined the program, with some officials saying they have all they can handle fighting serious crime in their counties.

I bet these other Sheriff's departments would soon find that as they detain and deport their illegal invaders they would soon find themselves in a situation where the crime begins a sudden and magical downturn.

The article is trying to make the arguement that the Sooners were no different than the illegal aliens. They kind of left out the fact that the Sooners were already here in this country. Big difference in crossing a state line as opposed to a border separating another country.
