    Farmers Branch Petition update

Opponents Of Anti-Illegal Immigration Measures Petition For Vote

    POSTED: 8:38 pm CST December 13, 2006

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas -- LULAC and other Hispanic groups announced Wednesday they have collected enough signatures to force a vote on three anti-illegal immigration ordinances in Farmers Branch.

Last month, city council members unanimously approved having property managers or owners verify the immigration or citizenship status of apartment renters.

Council members also approved resolutions making English the official language of the Dallas suburb, and allowing local authorities to become part of a federal program so they can enforce immigration laws.

Petitioners needed to collect at least 726 signatures, or 5 percent of the more than 14,500 voters who registered for the May election.

Organizers said they gathered about 1,400 signatures in about two weeks.

Farmers Branch officials have 15 days to review and validate the signatures on the petition as part of the process.

As from an article previously posted, I wonder how many of those signees new what they were signing. I wonder how many of them were told if they didn't sign they would be deported.

as i posted a reply to the post a few days ago let me say the same thing here

some people were told the petition had nothing to do with the illegal immigration stuff and were told it had to do with selling liquor.

one person called a radio talk show last week and said he signed it at kroger and was told this and in less that two hours later someone came to his door with the same petition and claimed it was for something else, this is when he got suspicious.

Won't they have to verify those signatures?

Doesn't everyone have to be a registered voter?

I hope a whole lot of people signed the petition several times. I would have signed it every time I saw it. hahahaha

1500 signatures seems like a lot. They still have to be verified, but I think they still should have enough, unfortunately. I think they will still pass by vote, regardless.

yeah, from what I'm hearing the city will be verifying every single signature to make sure that A: the person knew what they were signing and B: the person is a U.S. Citizen and a Registered Voter in Farmers Branch.

I don't think they will have enough, but still if voted on will pass.

Unfortunately most cities don't pass laws and regulations protecting american jobs and cities until after it has become a concern. I'd like to see cities here get ahead of the problem and pass some of these protectionist style laws before illegals take over half their cities.

Some city officials, I fear, won't approach the issue until they feel it is a problem. Even many citizens think the same way. I brought up the issue at a local political meeting and they just said it isn't a problem here. The mayor didn't respond to my email. Of course, in the words of Farers Branch hero Tim O'Hare, if they won't pay attention, recall them.

It is my understanding that the petition is to FORCE the people of Farmers Branch to either stand behind their elected officials who made the new laws to stop landlords from renting to illegals or to repeal it. So. the next step will be have a popular vote. I suggest that we start writing to every newspaper, every official, every person we can find in the town of Farmers Branch and let them know that they need to get out there and vote when the issue comes up instead of sitting on their butts complaining and doing nothing at a time when they can make a difference.
