ICE Deportation flights hit highest level under Trump

Deportation flights carrying immigrants out of the United States surged in May to their highest monthly level since President Donald Trump returned to office, reflecting the administration’s intensified push to expand immigration enforcement and accelerate removals.
According to data reported by the Washington Examiner, nearly 300 deportation flights departed the United States during May, marking a significant increase in removal operations compared with previous months and underscoring the administration’s efforts to fulfill its pledge of large-scale deportations.
The increase comes amid a broader expansion of immigration enforcement activities across the country. Since Trump’s return to the White House, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has ramped up arrests, detention capacity, and removal operations as part of a wider crackdown on unauthorized immigration.

The administration has repeatedly argued that stronger enforcement is necessary to secure the border and remove individuals who lack legal authorization to remain in the country. The White House has cited hundreds of thousands of removals and voluntary departures as evidence of the effectiveness of its immigration strategy.
Immigration enforcement data has shown a steady rise in both arrests and deportations over the past year. ICE deported more than 442,000 individuals during fiscal year 2025, according to previously released government data, while officials have continued to pursue higher removal targets.

The growth in deportation flights follows earlier increases in removal operations. Human Rights First reported that April 2026 had already set a record for removal flights since independent tracking began in 2020, indicating that enforcement activity was accelerating even before May’s surge
With deportation flights reaching new highs and immigration remaining a central political issue ahead of the midterm election cycle, the pace and scope of ICE enforcement are expected to remain under intense scrutiny from lawmakers, advocacy groups, and voters alike
