Democrats Challenge New Mo. Voter ID Law

Democrats Challenge New Mo. Voter ID Law

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Officials in Missouri's two largest cities filed a lawsuit Monday to block a new state law requiring voters to show photo identification.
Under the law, voters starting this November will need a photo ID issued by either the state of federal government, such as a driver's license, to cast a regular ballot. Those lacking IDs can cast provisional ballots, which would count if their signatures matched those on file with election authorities.
Republican Gov. Matt Blunt has praised the new law as a way to build public trust in elections.
But the Democratic leaders in St. Louis and Kansas City who sued say the law violates a state constitutional provision against imposing costs on local governments without providing state funding. Their lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction blocking the law from being enforced and class-action status.
"Our overall concern is that the new law is going to leave people out who want to vote, who deserve to vote and who are qualified to vote," said Anthony Rothert, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri, whose group announced the lawsuit.
The lawsuit says implementing the new law would cost the Kansas City area's Jackson County alone $470,000 to mail notices to voters and add the extra equipment and Election Day staffing and training.
Republican state Sen. Delbert Scott, who sponsored the legislation, said election officials already send out voter cards and the law provides for free photo IDs that voters can obtain before Election Day.
"We anticipated a lawsuit. I think they're struggling for an issue," he said.
A federal judge last week blocked the state of Georgia from enforcing its new voter ID law this year. U.S. District Judge Harold Murphy said the Georgia photo ID requirement discriminated against people who don't have driver's licenses, passports or other government identification.

I know the republicans and Bush "our" suppose to be republican president, has done a lousy job of running the country thus far,but the idea of the democrats being in charge sends ripples of shivers up and down my spine! All the polls show that over 50 % of Americans believe now the democrats should be in charge. I am hoping that is just a fluke and more dems were polled then republicans. I don't know what the answer is, I do know though that the democratic party is not the right choice. Almost all of them are for amnesty for the illegals and the bankruptcy of our Social Security system, none of them want to secure our border other then maybe 3 or 4 of them. None of them have the guts or the right stuff to finish a war they agreed to start in the first place. they have already stepped on the fighting side of me by using caskets containing the remains of our soldiers fighting in Iraq for their freedom and safety, in their democratic campaign commercials. I use to be a democrat in my younger days, when democrat stood for something other then cut and run, I just wonder what JFK if he were alive at this point in our history would think about his democratic party and his blowhard brother Teddy, who for as long as he could, blocked a bill that would create a new program nation wide to better keep up with sexual deviates who prey on our kids, so he could hang on to the back of that bill some kind of hate crime bill he came up with probably protecting the illegals rights.
To me we are going to have to either come up with a viable third party or vote the republicans who have stood firm against this illegal invasion and new republicans running on a no amnesty and secure border platform, back into power to see if they will now work for the people who elected them into office, otherwise our country is gonna go more rapidly to the dogs then it already is.I am sorry if I have stepped on some democratic toes here, you have every right to differ with my opinion that is what is so great about America, I just want to keep her like that, and not let political correctness rip the heart right out of her and gut our once proud country of her remaining pride! I want to be able to wave my American flag with dignity anytime I want to without being labled a racist for doing so by the oh so politically correct crowd who I think you would have to agree with me or mostly liberals which make up about 98% of the new democratic party.

I'm really pushing this issue at home because they give driver's licenses to illegals. Check a box if you are a citizen. Foolishness I say.

I just heard a federal judge has nixed the new voter id law in GA.because it puts the African American at a disadvantage, they might not have a government issued id, do you really think he was thinking about the African Americans when he nixed this? I don't!

Didn't Georgia also include in the legislation that they would pick up the tab for the id's? That in itself would negate the reasoning about putting anyone at a disadvantage.

Besides, since when are we not supposed to take responsibility for paying our way? Damn, I wanted to get on a plane and was forced to get a photo id - my expense. I wanted to go overseas, I paid for a passport.
I want to drive, I pay for a license. etc. etc. etc.

The powers that be DO NOT CARE ABOUT LEGITIMATE VOTING! It's that simple.
