- The mother of a slain pregnant Marine said she finds it shocking that the man charged in the killing might delay or avoid a U.S. trial by fighting extradition from Mexico.

"It's a tragedy after all the investment in this because a lot of people worked very hard to get to that point," said Mary Lauterbach of Vandalia, Ohio.

Cpl. Cesar Laurean, 21, fled to Mexico shortly before Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach's burned remains were found in January. He's appealing to the Mexican courts, arguing that North Carolina's life-without-parole sentence for first-degree murder is barred under the countries' extradition treaty.

Laurean is charged in the slaying of the 20-year-old Lauterbach, who had worked with him at Camp Lejeune and had accused him of rape. Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared in December.


Dewey Hudson, the district attorney in Onslow County, North Carolina, has already agreed not to seek the death penalty because Mexico's extradition policy prevents U.S. authorities from seeking it against fugitives who are turned over by Mexican authorities.

Mary Lauterbach said she opposes the death penalty.

"I can understand other countries having restrictions against that," she said, "but there is an enormous difference between life without parole and taking someone's life from them."

Mexican Marine was he illegal undocumented when they enlisted him into our military? I hate Mexico policy on telling America how to treat a killer.

HUH?!?!? Why would be be shocked at the actions of a murderer?? He will do whatever it takes to weasel his way out of this one. If he wants to spend the rest of his life in a Mexican jail, I say go for it!

Life in prison would be worse than death for this pretty boy.

Are you saying this guy was an illegal alien in the US or in Mexico?

Laurean has been a naturalized United States citizen since 2003. He is a United States Marine Corps Corporal who was assigned to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, when he apparently fled from North Carolina during the early morning hours of January 11, 2008. ( After murdering and then burning the body to cover up the crime) He was how ever born in Mexico.

I even heard that the Mexican police found him real fast because he couldn't speak Spanish and stuck out in the town he was hiding in.

Funny how when they break the law in the USA and run to Mexico, all of a sudden they REALLY want to be Mexicans. If he was "naturalized" in the USA, Mexico needs to hand him over. Mexico needs to butt out of OUR business!

He was NOT an ILLEGAL ALIEN.
