Carlos Reyes, 41, a farm worker from Honduras has been charged with using a machete to hack to death two of his co-workers on a Springfield farm.
MOUNT HOLLY — A farm worker from Honduras has been charged with using a machete to hack to death two of his co-workers on a Springfield farm, authorities announced today.
Burlington County Prosecutor Robert Bernardi said Carlos Reyes, 41, was the sole participant in the grisly murder of 27-year-old Alex Aguilar and 48-year-old Marcial Morales-Maldonado.
He said Carlos’s brother, Cesar Reyes, 38, witnessed the murder and later fled with his brother to Houston.
Carlos Reyes has been charged with two counts of murder, and Cesar Reyes is being held as a material witness in the homicide, Bernardi said.
The two brothers went missing shortly before the morning of Feb. 28 when the bodies of Aguilar and Morales-Maldonado on the Sterling Chase Farm in Springfield.
Advertisement All four men were from Honduras and worked and bunked together on the farm for several years, Bernardi said.
Carlos and Cesar Reyes were arrested in Houston on March 3 after state police detectives learned that they were traveling there by bus.
Bernardi said Cesar Reyes is cooperating and has provided investigators with a statement implicating his brother in the deaths.
Both men are immigrants living in the United States illegally, authorities said.
Bernardi said both brothers would be extradited to stand trial in New Jersey. He could not specify when extradition would occur.
The murders are believed to be the first homicide in Springfield in nearly 30 years.
