Illegal immigration surging due to political games

Janet Napolitano stating publicly thatsequestration is making the border less secure; the White House shrugging its collective shoulders at the news of thousands of aliens being released on the streets; promises of amnesty, with few restrictions, to be granted to those residing illegally within the United States; and a safety net should one not be able to find lucrative employment!

Each of these factors not only echoes across the United States but around the world, acting like a magnetic force to uproot families from their meager subsistence for the chance at the American Dream.
“…we have already begun to see unusually large groups of illegal aliens entering the United States in some parts of the country. This is what happens when you play political games with the nation’s security.” An entry by the National Border Patrol Council, Local 2544 in Tucson, Arizona states on March 4, 2013. The post is appropriately titled, "The Tidal Wave has Begun."

The border patrol union is stating the obvious. In years past, political policies have made it more attractive for certain groups and those policies have caused an onslaught of activity. On occasion in previous years, OTMs (Other than Mexicans) were given preferential treatment, released on their own recognizance and allowed to continue into the bowels of the United States. Of course this immediately reverberated back to Central and South America causing a flood of OTMs into the United States where OTMs were actually flagging down border patrol agents to receive their official traveling papers! All Cubans know of the “Wet Feet/Dry Feet” policy. If a Cuban is able to make it to land, they will not be deported. If they are intercepted at sea, they are returned to their homeland. This policy has predicated numerous journeys which have ended in tragedy.

My career with the border patrol, spanning more than a quarter century, allowed me to witness this first hand on several occasions.

The chance at the American Dream is something that millions of people across the world would love yet for many who live just across our southern border the chance is now and the benefits are tremendous.

Like a dam slowly breaking, the flood of illegal immigration is surging and unless stopped, will continue to increase until the barriers are trampled and the once impressive dam holding back most illegal immigrants is no longer.
