ALEXANDER STATEMENT EXPRESSING OPPOSITION TO THE DREAM ACT

September 17th, 2007 - “The problem with this legislation is that it extends government benefits to people illegally in the United States. We cannot restore a system of legal immigration – which is the real American Dream – if we undermine it by granting new benefits to those who are here illegally.â€

    ALLARD STATEMENT

I feel that the U.S. immigration system is in need of reform. It is important to make a clear distinction between illegal and legal immigration. We must crack down on all illegal immigration. I feel we should not reward illegal behavior with citizenship. As for legal immigrants, I favor strong sponsorship requirements and other policies, which aim to ensure that immigrants enter this country as productive members of society in pursuit of opportunity, not public assistance. As Americans, we must not forget that many of our forefathers were immigrants who had a strong sense of personal responsibility and who established the strong foundations of individualism which have made this country what it is today.

Lastest update on CONFIRMED PLEDGED "NO'S" AND STRONG NO'S GIVEN TO OUR CALLERS.

New update for ABSOLUTELY CONFIRMED NO'S

    Georgia: Chambliss; Isakson
    Kansas: Roberts
    Kentucky: Bunning; McConnell

    South Carolina: DeMint; Graham

    Wyoming: Enzi

    That's 18 confirmed with:

Strong "NO's" to our callers from:

Martinez, Allard, and Coburn strong "no's" by our callers.

Just to clarify with you. I'm adding those whose offices have called Numbers USA on their own to Pledge to vote NO on amnesty. That says a lot when they are pledging a NO vote and their offices call us. I don't discount the others just that they haven't taken the time to call from their media offices to confirm a PLEDGE. Hope that helps clarify the Confirmed and the Strong No's. We had no's yesterdary and they've turned to "yes".

This was from earlier today. Thought it might help.

    Dear

Thank you for your letter in regard to S. 774, the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act.

The DREAM Act was introduced by Senator Durbin of Illinois, and is currently awaiting consideration in the Senate Committee on the Judiciary. This legislation would award legal immigration status to hard-working students who have grown up in the United States and graduated from high school, but who are prevented from attending an institution of higher education because of their immigration status. The DREAM Act grants these students the opportunity to further their education and their contribution to our society. Should this bill come before the full Senate for a vote, I will support it.

Thank you again for your letter.

    Sincerely,
    Sherrod Brown
