Immigrant youths make good case to retain DACA

    Posted: Wednesday, January 11, 2017 12:00 pm

    Hub Opinion

The Kearney Hub adds its voice to the 60 Nebraska municipal, education, business, health, faith, law enforcement and community organizations and leaders who are urging Congress to pass legislation that continues the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

The DACA program was created in 2012 by President Obama to protect the children of undocumented immigrants.

On Tuesday, members of the pro-DACA group signed a public letter to Nebraska’s congressional representatives to express community support and recognize the valuable contributions to Nebraska by DACA recipients and their families. Without help from Congress, the protections these youths have today against deportation could be gone tomorrow with the stroke of a president’s pen.

Campaign statements by President-elect Donald Trump leave the continuation of DACA in doubt. That’s why so many Nebraskans spoke out this week to spur Congress to act.

DACA is a humanitarian and realistic response to a difficult situation because the children it protects against deportation had no say in their parents bringing them to the United States.

Since DACA’s creation, its value has been recognized across the nation, with all 50 states enacting additional measures affirming and expanding the legality of these immigrant youths — often referred to as “Dreamers.”

In Nebraska, DACA youths are allowed to hold driver’s licenses and they can also apply for professional licenses. Dreamers are earning a living working jobs in the communities where they live, or they are pursuing college and professional degrees, such as the DACA youths enrolled at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

These young people understand the amazing opportunity that’s been afforded them — the opportunity to achieve the American dream.

The letter to our congressional delegation signed by the 60 Nebraskans reads: “We strongly urge you to preserve DACA so that these important community members can continue to work hard as teachers, health care professionals, accountants, counselors, and small-business owners.”

Retaining DACA is the correct thing to do, both morally and economically. Next, it’s time for Congress to pass updated, common-sense immigration laws that keep criminals out but welcome law-abiding, skilled and educated immigrants who can help make our nation stronger.

No it is not a "humanitarian or realistic response". It's an illegal response, a response that violates the laws of our country that are in place to protect jobs, educations, benefits, housing, food, water, health care, education and so much more that belong to the American People.

Get them all out. Get them all out now. How you ended up in our country, who brought you here, who drove you here, who was paid to smuggle you here .... none of that matters. You're in the wrong country and that wrong needs to be righted, right here, right now. So start packing.

You do not get to profit, or reap the benefits, on behalf of YOUR parents criminal activity and trespass into our Country.

The moral thing to do is for you to sell out, pack up and get out.

It is the CORRECT thing, economically, for the USA to enforce it's laws and deport all illegals including their children.

It is the correct and economic thing for the State and Federal Government to cut off ALL freebies to illegals, including school, and stop aiding and abetting them.

DREAMERS, have an issue with their parent's decisions. These same DREAMERs benefited from free education, free breakfast lunch and dinner and free medical at the expense of US citizens and taxpayers. It is not the responsibility of the US government to "make it right" for their parents. Nor, should the parents be rewarded through DAPA. IMO
