Nativists Make Heroes of Border Shooters

    Nativist Extremism
Nativists Make Heroes of Border Shooters

    Chris Simcox
    Read the Hatewatch Blog
Border Patrol agents Ignacio "Nacho" Ramos and José Alonso Compean attacked an unarmed border-crosser who was trying to surrender, shot at him 15 times and wounded him as he fled, then tampered with the crime scene and failed to report the shooting as required to their supervisors. For their crimes, a federal court in Texas sentenced the men last year to terms of 11 and 12 years in prison.

Now, courtesy of the nativist movement, they are heroes.

Lou Dobbs, the CNN anchor obsessed with undocumented immigration, has featured their case at least 131 times, including a one-hour special, according to the September issue of Texas Monthly. They've been glorified by anti-immigration websites and lionized by politicians like U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.). Even the American Freedom Riders, a nativist biker gang, calls them "persecuted."

Why are so many associated with the law-and-order right singing the praises of these two felons? Because the man who was shot turned out later to have been part of a marijuana-smuggling operation. Ramos and Compean didn't know that at the time — the man was on foot and tried to surrender, and the agents only found the drugs in a van after he managed to flee on foot back to Mexico, badly wounded. Dobbs describes the officers as "these two outstanding Border Patrol agents."

Dobbs, along with many others, thinks they should go free.

Rival Minutemen leaders Chris Simcox and Jim Gilchrist were both at a Sept. 8 fundraiser for Ramos' family that was hosted by the American Freedom Riders. More than $38,000 was contributed and over 400 people attended to show their "absolute disdain for [President] Bush's 'dear friend' Johnny Satan" — a reference to prosecutor Johnny Sutton, the highly conservative U.S. attorney who had worked for Bush in Texas and Washington. Others, like Dobbs, have also savaged Sutton.

Republican congressmen Dana Rohrabacher (Calif.) and John Culberson (Texas) have even claimed that the agents are suffering prison conditions "far worse than those of suspected terrorists being held" at Guantánamo Bay in Cuba.

What no one has offered is any proof that the two are innocent.

Now, the nativist fervor is expanding to others similarly situated — in particular, Border Patrol agent Nicholas Corbett, who last January shot dead Mexican construction worker Francisco Javier Dominguez-Rivera a few yards north of the border. Corbett claimed he shot in self-defense after being threatened with a rock, but forensic and video evidence, along with accounts of several witnesses detained with Dominguez-Rivera, contradicted him, suggesting instead that the worker was shot without provocation after he was forced to kneel directly in front of Corbett. Corbett faces trial on second-degree murder charges in February.,/p>

Anti-immigration activists claim Corbett is being railroaded due to pressure from Mexico. In October, the American Freedom Riders rallied to support him, describing him as "another agent charged with murder for doing his job."

I am sick and tired of this politicalization of the English language.

I guess 'nativist' is the new code word. The next step is probably to teach it in schools as the modern day equivalent to Nazism. That's just how things work in this country.

my response to the SLPC and their racist organization was this

your work against hate groups who want the laws of this once great country saddens me because you fail to put on your hate groups such orgainzations as LaRaza, Maldef, Mecha, and other groups like this where you can not join if you are not HISPANIC. thats the true race groups.

Now before you classify a group a hate group you need to do your research before a group or an individual sues your organization for defamation of character and other things.

stop screwing the american people and start serving the american people. Illegals in this country do not count. people crossing the border DO NOT COUNT.
    Illegal immigrants are lawbreakers who
    1 enter a country illegally
2 use fraud to obtain welfare and foodstamp
3 but or forge US identities to frauduently obtain employment.
4 Lie on federal income tax forms.

Some of the people who come across are criminals from their own country, leaving it because of the persecution in their homeland. (where is the SLPC working on this problem)

Your 'hate' or name calling for those you dont agree with is childish and immature. maybe your organization needs to look in the mirror to see who is the real hate group.

is someone who sits on the border and notify border patrol of someone entering the US a hate person??? or is it someone helping the border patrol with capruting lawbreakers???

is someone who sits on the border and gives water or food to someone illegally crossing the border a hateful person?? and is it wrong that the person illegally crossing gives up to these people, actually waits for BP to come so they can go back to mexico... is there something wrong there???

IS THE United States of America a nation of laws? if so, what is so wrong with wanting people to follow our laws???
Your group does not even know what a hate group is.

The REAL crime of the Ramos-Compean affair was NOT the shooting in self-defense by Ramos and Compean of illegal alien drug runner Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila; the real crime was Aldrete-Davila's attempt to SMUGGLE DRUGS into OUR country and his VICIOUS ASSAULT of Agent Compean when Compean tried to arrest him. Aldrete-Davila is THE CRIMINAL; Ramos and Compean are REAL American heroes!

Actually Bush used it openly for quite sometime and it stems from the 5 points days of New York, when native New Yorkers opposed the massive LEGAL imigration of Irish into the area. LEGAL being the key word. I can guarantee that Bush knew nothing of the term until it was gently whispered repeatedly into his ear.
