Noting that he arrived in the United States legally in 1962 as part of Operation Pedro Pan, which brought Cuban children to this country, Martinez said he felt a personal responsibility to play a part in the immigration debate.

Sen. Mel Martinez. Regarding immigration issues, Martinez says, we're sanctimonious and "it's about America."

Not so, Mel. Shouldn't it be "it's about security"? Or instead, maybe he's thinking, "It's about re-election."

He is going to find out what losing an election is all about if he doesn't put "secure borders" front and center, instead of another Martinez/Hagel amendment with its many unenforceable hoops for illegal aliens to jump though to get a shot at citizenship eventually. Make it simple, Mel: Obey the immigration laws and get in line for citizenship like all the other good people who come here legally.
