Interesting conversation with a lady of Hispanic origin

I received this in an email yesterday from a woman I know who lives and works in Virginia. Thought you might all like to see it.

I had an interesting conversation with a lady of Hispanic origin last week.
She told me that she planned to come down to St. Mary's Hospital and get a
job in Admissions (where I work). When I pointed out that we didn't have any

openings she advised me that "soon" current employees will have to be fired
so they can hire bi-lingual employees. According to this lady, the Spanish
speaking people of the US are going to demand that all public facilities
    - like
hospitals, courthouses, etc. - be staffed by people who read, speak and
    comprehend Spanish.

We hear about the silent majority but I think we are going to have to speak
up or find ourselves a conquered country. That would be an interesting
historical note - greatest land in the world conquered by Mexico without
ever firing a shot! Think about it.
DEMAND???? DEMAND????? LOOKS TO ME LIKE THEY HAVE ALREADY DONE WAY TOO MUCH DEMANDING ALREADY.
JUST WHERE THE HECK DO THEY THINK THEY ARE? THE NERVE OF SOME PEOPLE.

I would have demanded to see her papers, and demanded to know why she and other hispanics can't or refuse to learn English.

That is absolutly the next step and it's not going to be that many years till these anchor babies are of voting age and city by city...state by state...they are going to try and vote Spanish as the "official" language. There HAS to be real pressure on this issue as well, before we're all out of a job and handing everything generations of our families worked for to recent immigrants (legal and illegal) who refused to assimilate.

I got so mad at my local Shoprite, that I wrote them a letter telling them we live in America and should not have to see Spanish translations on their ATM station at each checkout line. If they put spanish, they should put every other language up, better yet just keep English!

Also, a store sign on the door saying "No Fumar) No Smoking.

They got the message and took it down.

Just call and write letters. You would be surprised at the quick response.

These new immigrants have been demanding services in their language for 20 years! Start writing and calling. Fight back and demand ENGLISH!

I have and unfortunatly when you have a large hispanic population....they don't care. What angers me is they are opening businesses....catering to hispanics and don't have anything translated in English. No white, black, asian, etc. employees. All of "our" businesses that cater to hopefully all (and I assume we do coz their all shopping there) are bending over backwards for just hispanics. I'd like to see someone have enough guts to keep things in English. Plus...just a side here......they need to make up their damn mind on the rules. They had a no-smoking in Spanish and that was ok.......but we put up "bathroom out of order in English and Spanish and were told to take it down because it was "racist".

That is just not right crazybird.

My mother n law came to America 40 years ago and taught herself English. She only taught English to her 5 kids as well.

I think if they want to keep their languages they should only speak them at home. Anywhere else, including signs ect.. stinks of SEPERATISM and RECONQUEST.

It does not promote unity of a nation, it promotes disunity.

Hey......I agree CC. 100% with you!

I just thought it was funny that they can post a no smoking sign in Spanish but our store was charged with "racism" because we posted "bathroom out of order" in Spanish and English. We didn't know what to do. We knew exactly who the group was. They came in every Saturday and Sunday. They kept flushing disposable diapers down the toliet. We posted signs in the bathroom to no avail so it got to the point we had to close it at times because the plumber couldn't get there. When it was out of order they trashed it worse. You had to know the building set up to know it wasn't a simple matter of locking a door. But it's funny how they can print whatever they want in Spanish but even when you are posting it for their own safety....we're "racist".

I do not at all beleive a bi-lingual culture works. I realize at tourist areas and such it is helpful to have employees know another language. ANY other language. Some employees....not a mandatory requirement. I am having a serious problem when I can't get a job in my own country because I don't speak Spanish! I don't even mind having another employee earn more per hour than me because they are fluent in any other language when it's necessary......but I shouldn't be REFUSED employment in my own country because I don't speak Spanish. We would just ask others to help communicate with a person if we couldn't.

Reminds me of now when you go in a grocery store and such that sells liquor. It's a pain here coz so many at the register aren't old enough to "handle liquor sales". So it's a busy night and they have 1 person over the age of 21 in front. They have their lane to run....but they also have to run to every other register and drag the stuff over the scanner when it's alcohol or cigarettes. I don't beleive all people under the age of 21 should be banned from working as a cashier.......but I do beleive if your over 21 you should get a bit more money if you have that additional responsibility.

I don't know if anyone has ever thought of this - There are many private associations and clubs in this country representing their cultural heritage like Sons of Italy, The German American Society, Polish American Association, etc. (If you do a search I'm sure you'll find one for every nationality)

I don't think many businesses could continue catering to the Hispanic population by providing Spanish language services, if all these groups got together and complained that these actions are discriminatory against other non-english speaking immigrant groups.

If some sort of campaign could be started, there's no way these businesses could possibly translate documents or information in every language. Therefore, in our curent climate of political correctness, they would be forced to provide only the English language. I think this could work. Any thoughts?

I like it. If we get enough Tower of Babel confusion going, people will finally say ENOUGH--ENGLISH ONLY, ALREADY!

Perhaps someone with more professional writing skills than myself, could come up with a standard letter (it would be great if Alipac could come up with something), stating our concern as Americans and how these businesses are discrminiating against other non-english speaking groups. Then we could fax or email the letter to these clubs and organizations. We could all pitch in searching for the different associations and their numbers and posting them here. I think it's worth a try to get our own language back, don't you??
