Jeff Sessions Attorney General confirmation vote set for 6 p.m. tonight

The Senate is set to vote tonight on the nomination of Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions to be the next U.S Attorney General.

The floor vote on Sessions will take start between 5:50 p.m. - 6 p.m. CST. Sessions is expected to be confirmed in the Republican-majority Senate, with at least one Democrat, West Virginia's Joe Manchin, also saying he will support the Alabama Senator.

If confirmed, Sessions will become the fifth cabinet-level nominee of President Donald Trump to be sworn into their respective post. A four-term Senator, Sessions will also be the first Alabamians to be named U.S. Attorney General.

The nomination process for Sessions has been highly charged and today's vote comes after 24 hours of protests by Democrats questioning the Senator's record on civil rights. Yesterday, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren was silenced after Senate leaders said her criticisms of Sessions violated standing rules.

Democrats successfully delayed a vote on Sessions last week. Yesterday, he cast a vote in favor of Betsy DeVos, Trump's controversial education secretary pick, joining with Vice President Mike Pence in casting the deciding votes.

During the campaign, Sessions emerged as one of Trump's key advisors and the leading voice of those supporting increased control over immigration. During his confirmation hearings, Democrats questioned if Sessions could act independently of the president in his role as the leader of the Justice Department.

Once confirmed, Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley will name Sessions' replacement.
