Jerry Brown Signs Bill That Could Let Illegal Aliens Vote

    by William Bigelow12 Oct 20152,349

On Saturday, California Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 1461, the New Motor Voter Act, which will automatically register people to vote through the DMV, and could result in illegal aliens voting.

Any person who renewed or secured a driver’s license through the DMV may now register to vote, or choose to opt out of doing so. Because illegal immigrants are now eligible for obtaining driver’s licenses, they could be allowed to vote in elections if the Secretary of State’s office fails to verify their eligibility properly.

Brown and the California Democratic party know exactly what they are doing; as a Public Policy Institute survey showed, among unregistered adults, 49% lean toward the Democratic Party and 22% toward the Republican Party. Any bill permitting illegal immigrants to vote would cement the Democratic Party’s hold on California.

True the Vote founder Catherine Engelbrecht stated, “This bill is terrible. It makes an already bad situation much, much worse,” adding that California’s registration databases “lack the necessary safeguards to keep noncitizens off the voter rolls.”

Election Integrity Project of California President Linda Paine echoed that AB 1461 “will effectively change the form of governance in California from a Republic whose elected officials are determined by United States citizens and will guarantee that noncitizens will participate in all California elections going forward.” The Election Integrity Project of California had joined True the Vote to demand that brown veto the bill, calling it a path to “‘state sanctioned’ voter fraud.”

Although noncitizens’ driver’s licenses in California feature the phrases “Federal Limits Apply” and “not valid for official federal purposes,” True the Vote spokesman Logan Churchwell pointed out that state officials “specifically chose not to make noncitizen license holders searchable in their DMV database.”

California Secretary of State Alex Padilla countered that the increase in voters will benefit the state, arguing, “The New Motor Voter Act will make our democracy stronger by removing a key barrier to voting for millions of California citizens. Citizens should not be required to opt in to their fundamental right to vote. We do not have to opt in to other rights, such as free speech or due process.”

California follows Oregon, where Democratic Gov. Kate Brown signed a bill in March allowing the automatic registration of all eligible Oregonians to vote when they obtain or renew a driver’s license or state identification card.

But Stephen Frank of California Political Review bluntly asserted that the bill will reduce voter turnout because voters will sniff fraud in the polls: “AB 1461 assures corruption of our elections–our elections will look like those of Mexico and other corrupt nations–and honest people will stop voting since illegal aliens will out vote them.”

Donald Trump is making a strong case for a recount of his own 2016 election win

By Aaron Blake November 28 at 7:30 AM

On Sunday morning, President-elect Donald Trump assured us all that a recount of the 2016 election wouldn't change the outcome and was a waste of resources. In a tweetstorm, he quoted Hillary Clinton:

Later Sunday, though, he made a real case that we should have no confidence in those same election results, alleging massive voter fraud:

Trump, of course, is pointing only to “fraud” that benefited Clinton; Virginia, New Hampshire and California are all states she won, and the baseless idea that illegal immigrants voted by the millions is supposed to have helped Clinton, given the fact that immigrants — and specifically undocumented ones — overwhelmingly favor Democrats.

Trump was doing this to make the case that he didn't actually lose the popular vote, which has become a Democratic rallying cry following Clinton's loss. It's clearly a sore spot for Trump.

But the president-elect is also, unwittingly and amazingly, calling into question the results of an election that he won nearly three weeks ago. The logical extension of his argument is that all results should not be trusted. In effect, Trump is lending credence to the very same recount effort that he criticized as superfluous.

A caveat on all of this: There is absolutely no evidence of Trump's alleged large-scale voter fraud. And even Clinton's campaign, while joining in recount efforts initiated by Green Party nominee Jill Stein, has acknowledged as much. So I am not saying that there is suddenly a real reason to doubt the fact that Trump won the 2016 election.

What I am saying is that, if the system was susceptible to the kind of pro-Clinton fraud that Trump is alleging, who is to say that it wasn't also susceptible to manipulation that might have benefited Trump? Trump's argument is that our electoral system was vulnerable to all kinds of shenanigans that could have changed the results in specific states. Why not shenanigans instigated by Russia, which experts say aided Trump during the campaign with fake-news propaganda? Or something else? There is also no evidence of this, but apparently evidence is not required for our next president to make a charge.

Trump is alleging that these shenanigans (yes, I said it again) accrued to Clinton's benefit, but if our system has so many holes in it, why couldn't those holes have helped Trump in the states that mattered? If illegal immigrants can vote and there was real voter fraud in states such as California, New Hampshire and Virginia, why couldn't these things have happened in circumstances and places that didn't hurt Trump? Why not in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, where Trump won the presidency by a margin of about a point or less? If the system is that shoddy, it's probably shoddy everywhere.

Trump is saying that something happened — on a large scale. He's basing this on dubious Internet sources, but he's raising doubts about results of an election that made him the president-elect. It's hard to argue, from that point, that it's not worth examining just how many real irregularities there are and whether they all just happened to accrue to Clinton's benefit. This is the president-elect and the soon-to-be leader of the free world, after all, and his words are supposed to carry weight.

This is just Trump being Trump, of course. He is the president-elect, yes, but he's also a bona fide conspiracy theorist. (Remember how Ted Cruz's dad might have been involved in JFK's assassination?) We can no longer dismiss his fomenting of these baseless theories as some political ploy; it's who he is. And he's willing to call into question anything that doesn't show him to be the clear winner. Given that he will lose the popular vote by as much as two full points, he's in desperate search of an excuse for this fact.

I think a lot of illegal aliens and non-citizens voted in states that do not verify citizenship either through a driver's license that tracks back to a birth certificate either directly or through another state that issued the original driver's license that verified age with a birth certificate or requires a document that verifies you are a citizen of the United States and eligible to vote for voter registration purposes.

The issuance of driver's licenses to illegal aliens that don't distinguish and then do automatic voter registration based on the license is open season for voting by illegal aliens. This didn't used to be a problem in the United States because a) we didn't have that many illegal aliens in the US and b) we didn't issue drivers licenses to illegal aliens that are used for voter registration, but today we do in predominantly Democratic states where Trump lost by huge margins.

It's hard to believe that American citizens in states like California and New York favored Hillary Clinton 2 to 1 but for the illegal immigration problem. Democrats have created a terrible and awful situation in our country on all levels. The vast majority of Americans recognize this even if they don't follow all the details and problems we do here at ALIPAC. Just ordinary citizens who are not activists know this is a huge problem that needs a solution.

States should not be "aiding and abetting" illegal aliens by issuing these Driver's Licenses. I hope Trump puts a stop to it they are NO GOOD!

Why undocumented immigrants won’t take advantage of ‘motor voter’ law: Thomas Elias

By Thomas D. Elias, The Daily Breeze

    Posted: 01/03/16, 2:32 PM PST |

California’s new “motor voter” law has taken effect, even if it’s not yet in massive use, and so far the sky has not fallen.

Many Republicans predicted trouble the moment Gov. Jerry Brown signed the new measure into law last fall, with GOP activists predicting it would lead to state-sanctioned voter fraud and flood the voting rolls with non-citizens.

But this has not happened yet and probably never will.

That’s because the same rules that prevent undocumented immigrants from receiving the same type of California driver’s license as citizens or legal residents will apply to everyone automatically registered to vote during visits to Department of Motor Vehicles offices.

The new law registers every eligible Californian who goes to the DMV to get or renew a driver’s license. Once Secretary of State Alex Padilla sets up a specific procedure to be followed in all offices, every eligible person who doesn’t opt out will be registered.

Republicans’ fears stem from the fact that many new license applicants today are Latinos and their participation rate in the last few elections has hovered just above 15 percent, the lowest for any ethnic group. Asian-Americans are next lowest.

The GOP knows that Latinos who do vote have long gone mostly Democratic, one reason some Republicans give for opposing a path to citizenship for the undocumented. The subtext of that opposition is simple: Make citizenship available to undocumented Hispanic immigrants and then make voting easy for them, and the huge Democratic voter registration pluralities in California and elsewhere will become even more pronounced.

This is one reason Republicans in many other states have made voter registration and voting itself more difficult for everyone, requiring some kind of official photo
identification before even registered voters can get a ballot to fill out.

California’s new law also requires photo ID, something GOP critics of the new law — passed without Republican support in the Legislature — ignore.

    A quick visit to the
DMV’s website reveals that besides passing written and road tests, recipients of new legal-resident drivers licenses must show a Social Security card and prove their “legal presence” in California and the nation.

That proof can be a birth certificate, passport, immigration green card or even Border Patrol crossing cards and Mexican consular IDs. Only those whose identification proves they are eligible to vote will automatically be registered.

That’s why Padilla could confidently say after Brown signed the new law: “We’ve built the protocols and the firewalls to not register people that aren’t eligible. We’re going to keep those firewalls in place.”

But the Tea Party and other conservative organizations that oppose making voting easier for eligible citizens ignore all this.

“The law ... will guarantee that non-citizens will participate in all California elections going forward,” said Linda Paine, president of the Election Integrity Project of California.

The new law, her website added, “facilitates noncitizens to register and vote with prosecutorial immunity and will break down the integrity of California’s election process to
the point that it cannot be repaired.”

But the DMV rules make it easy for any clerk to tell who’s an eligible voter, and Padilla promises the procedure he’s setting up will ensure even more security.

Registering to vote has always required showing some of the same documentation needed for a driver’s license. Forged versions of those documents are no easier or harder to obtain now than before.

Which means that voter fraud — a negligible phenomenon in California up to now — figures to remain at about the same very low levels as ever.

And yet, conservative Republicans who have long asserted — with no proof — that the undocumented vote in large numbers, insist there will be much more fraud.

“This assures corruption of our elections,” Stephen Frank, former president of the California Republican Assembly, wrote on his blog. “Our elections will look like those of Mexico and other corrupt nations and honest people will stop voting since illegal aliens will outvote them.”

Frank and other conservatives insist the sky is falling — but a quick look outside demonstrates that’s just not so.

Motor Voter Act is a driving force

DMVs will soon auto register California voters

    BY RON DONOHO rond@sdcitybeat.com

Automatic voter registration is coming to DMVs.
Photo by Micah Sittig / Flickr

Sunday was the deadline for Gov. Jerry Brown to sign or veto bills passed by the state Legislature. He’s likely recovering from writer’s cramp this week, but it’s Republicans who are wringing their hands over pas- sage of AB 1461. That’s the New Motor Voter Act, which could increase voter rolls in San Diego County by 700,000, and by nearly 7 million statewide.

Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez authored the New Motor Voter Act. It aims to easily and automatically register every voting-eligible resident who applies for or renews a driver’s license at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The Act goes into effect Jan. 1, 2016. It is not retroactive.

The DMV will ask you to record your party affiliation.

If you don’t want to register to vote you can opt out. (In this case, if you complain about politics anytime afterward, you deserve to have a set of car keys shoved down your throat.)

Before the New Motor Voter program begins registering citizens at the DMV, however, VoteCal—the statewide voter registration database—has to be officially certified and deployed. VoteCal is scheduled to be certified and go live by June 2016, according to Sam Mahood, press secretary for California Secretary of State Alex Padilla.

Note: State voters must still opt-in to vote by May 23, 2016, to vote in the primary election on June 7, 2016. The new system should be in place for the general election on Nov. 8, 2016.

Since the national Motor Voter Act of 1993, voter registration materials have been available at DMVs. That made it relatively simple to opt-in. However, Gonzalez says fewer than one in five residents who interact with the DMV opt in.

“As we watch states across the country do their best to disenfranchise voters, I’m proud to have legislation signed into law that actually expands voting opportunities for all Californians,” Gonzalez said in a released statement. “Removing an unnecessary barrier to voter registration will allow us to get down to the business of increasing actual participation.”

Some concern has been raised that Motor Voter will lead to voter fraud in the shape of illegal immigrants casting ballots. That’s a nonstarter. The DMV already screens out noncitizens who have AB 60 driver’s licenses. And, the DMV is prohibited from sending the Secretary of State records belonging to anyone who can’t satisfy voter eligibility requirements, including AB 60 applicants.

So why are members of the California GOP opining that political Armageddon is upon them?

In part because the Micah Sittig / flickr majority of the state’s are, you guessed it, Democrats. A study by UC Davis found that eligible-but-unregistered voters in the state are largely minorities and young adults. That includes 30 to 45 percent of African Americans, Asian Americans and Latinos.

Whether or not it’s a political power play by Dems, Motor Voter is a good idea that makes sense. California follows Oregon in enacting automatic voter registration, a policy that already exists in countries like Canada and Sweden.

Honestly, the opt-in process was not a particularly tall barrier. It was nothing like the racist Deep South literacy tests abolished by The Voting Rights Act of 1965. But opt-in was a barrier, nonetheless.

Political elites who refer to eligible-but-unregistered residents as potentially uninformed voters who shouldn’t cast ballots because they don’t understand the issues are dinosaurs offering reactionary commentary.

Simply put, participatory government works best when the most people possible have a free path to participate.
