The California legislature hired former U.S. attorney general Eric Holder and his Washington, D.C. law firm to help the state with legal challenges against President Donald Trump's administration, and it is costing taxpayers $25,000 a month, according to Judicial Watch.

Judicial Watch obtained the records through a Legislative Open Records Act request.

Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton slammed Holder in a statement.

"The new records show California state legislators are wasting tax dollars to bankroll another corrupt politician — Eric Holder — under the pretense of attacking the Trump administration. This expensive contract is corny corruption pure and simple. The swamp of public corruption has taken over California," Fitton said.

The 90-day contract with Holder's firm violates the California Constitution, according to California Assemblyman Kevin Kiley, a Republican, according to Reuters.

Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon said the legislature was exempt from that rule, according to Fox News.

Holder was attorney general under President Barack Obama. He was the first U.S. attorney general to be held in contempt of Congress, according to the Judicial Watch's statement.
