It is so true, no matter who wrote it. Americans are all "mongrels" of sorts, meaning, we cannot be lumped together by our looks, our ethnic/national backgrounds, or by religion.

I use the word mongrel, it was my father that started that with me, here is my reasoning. Ever notice how the purebred dog is usually a nervous and snippy creature? How it will bite the hand that feeds it? How it snarls and growls at anyone it is not "familiar with? Then there is the good old mongrel, easy going, kind, loving, would share its food if you wanted it, and loves your children, and trusts you with its own?

Ever notice how the mongrel will trust anyone, even if people have wronged it before? The mongrel will welcome you to it's home, even though you may not speak a language it recognizes, or you might "smell" different.

Americans are the "mongrels". Mongrel is not a nasty word. In the dictionary, it says it is "of a mixed breed". Precisely. We all are. Some might say they are "pure", but even if their own blood lines are new here, and have yet to mix, be assured it will happen, and even before that, the mongrel Americans easy going, trusting and caring nature, will have become the preferred way of life to that new comer.

Our culture and language is even "mongrel". Our culture is a blend of many, as well our modern language is too. Be proud my fellow mongrels!!!

you are so right, it matters not to me who wrote it but that someone did write it. I have learned to take things of the net with a grain of salt, yet I have also learned to take my "warm fuzzies" wherever I can get them and enjoy them for what they mean to me!

When I was younger, I used to say I was a "Heinz 57".

Wow, I haven't heard that term in quite awhile. Thanks for the warm reminder of an era that I'm sure many of us can relate too.

Remember you parents telling you to enjoy your youth because it goes by so fast? They weren't kidding. My 30's came and went faster than I care to remember and my 40's are going just as fast. Now I find myself looking for ways to slow it down and enjoy life. Coming to this website helps keep me fired up.

But at least you guys know that some of us "young'uns" were taught something!
