Romney letter to Humphries

Dear Richard

Thank you for contacting me regarding immigration and border control for our country. I appreciate your interest in my campaign for President and would like to extend my sincere gratitude for taking the time to share your views with me. Meaningful immigration reform is of the highest priority for the American people. Immigration has been an important component of our nation's success. Legal immigration brings enhanced culture, vitality, love for opportunity and a larger workforce, whereas illegal immigration prevents us from determining which skills and elements we want to have enter our country. We need to make America more attractive for legal immigrants and less attractive for illegal immigrants.

As Governor of Massachusetts, I was active in illegal immigration control, preventing the adoption of measures to provide driversÃ* licenses, voting privileges, and in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. I also signed an agreement allowing Massachusetts State Troopers to detain illegal immigrants.

I support the creation of an employment verification system, with a tamper-proof card that can be verified by employers before they hire people. I would penalize employers who hire people who did not have a card and who had not verified the card through the employment verification system. I oppose an amnesty program that would automatically grant citizenship to 11 million illegal immigrants already in this country. We need to secure our borders, enforce federal immigration laws, and take control of the growing illegal immigration problem facing our country.

Thank you again for contacting me about immigration. In addition, please feel free to visit
