New Mexico: The latest state in the immigration battle

This week, New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez issued an executive order, authorizing police in the state to inquire about the immigration status of anyone they suspect of a crime. This means minor traffic infractions, jaywalking or any other minor offense could end with jail time and deportation.

Additionally, the New Mexico legislature is considering a bill that would block access to drivers’ licenses for undocumented immigrants.

Basically, New Mexico would rather that local law enforcement spend it’s time chasing down undocumented people and wants to make sure the roads are less safe by not issuing licenses to people who need to get to work or take their kids to school.

Neat.

Already, there has been push back from groups in New Mexico who want to keep the state safe for everyone. Somos Un Pueblo Unido is holding a day of action today at the state capitol, asking Governor Martinez to veto any bill that blocks access to drivers’ licenses.

Join them in keeping New Mexico safe for everyone.

Congress’ failure to take up immigration reform is now placing the heaviest burdens on those most vulnerable. Fight back with them.
